Get me the Elephant on the telephone...
I want to talk to the President
I think that the elephant artificially inflated his data
I envy his ivory tusk,
but his dismissive air is a bit too brusque
I know of an enemy agent elephant-
a member of a rogue band of fringe elements
free radicals, into heavy elements
They were awarded the Heavy Metal Medal of Honor
The highest honor that be bestowed on an elephant
According to the allegations, he was a plant
It was a excellent example of Elephant Intrigue
He was a most elegant elephant..
He wanted free elections
The Electrified Elephant engaged in articulate elocution
He would have preferred a peaceful solution
But his band of elephants was endangered-
crushed underfoot of a grand, old party's stampede
that was part of their grand Southern strategy
To sensible warnings, their party paid no heed,
treating fellow elephants with indifference
They could not inhale and exhale, in the foul air
of heavy elephant flatulence
Lacking hope, they had to escape in the night
to elope with their lovers
They were coming down Main Street, unexpected
and unaccepted as elephants
Carefully and subtly hidden by a hanky
The stars of the Circus

This book is a detailed, even exhaustive study of what the
author terms a "cultural phenomenon." The dissertation was
presented to a department of Volkskunde, roughly what the
English language terms ethnology. The work is heavily based on
the author's enthusiastic participant observation, supplemented
by fan magazines, recording liner notes, and interviews with
other fans and musicians. These sources are treated as primary (
"sources from the scene"). She also considers denunciations by
religious writers, and more measured commentary by academics (
"sources about the scene"). Thus, "instead of relying.. on
secondary literature, attention is directed to the phenomenon
itself.
In order to avoid misinterpretations, fans and musicians
themselves are cited as much as possible.at the same time,
proper treatment demands a balance of subjective involvement and
objective observation."
This statement encapsulates the author's purpose: to do
intellectual justice to a phenomenon which lies largely beyond
the categories of academic reflection, without betraying the
core experiences and "world" of Heavy Metal. Broadly, her
methodological guide is the work of Pierre Bourdieu on taste
cultures. The book has substantial chapters on the problems of
studying Heavy Metal, sources, musical style, social and
geographical distribution, gender attitudes and roles, logos,
clothing and aesthetic styles, politics, economics, the Satanism
controversies, and a summary consideration, in which Roccor
examines the roots of Metal in working class culture.

The Elephant is Contagious
Elephants are contagious !
(and pigs are now too.)
So run away (Quickly !) when one?s headed toward you.
They aren't contagious at first
(but then just you wait !)
When they grow hungry, they'll use you as bait.
They'll tie you down snug and then hide in the brush,
And you better not scream ! (Or they'll tell you to, "hush.")
They'll wait (nice and quiet) concealing their mass
Until an unsuspecting snake slithers by in the grass.
Then POUNCE ! WOOPIE ! and 'My, What a hold !'
The elephant jumps and knocks the snake flat out cold.
He'll grab him by the head and then by the tail
and tie him in knots around a big plastic nail.
He's quite the collector of knotted up snakes
hanging on nails, it's a sight (goodness sakes !)
So remember to keep any elephant from you
Cause Elephants are contagious (and pigs are now too !)

A typical short example of surrealist writing is the proverb by
Paul Eluard that states 'Elephants are contagious.' This purely
psychic automatism was modified later by the conscious use,
especially in painting, of symbols derived from Freudian
psychology. Like their forerunners, the Dadaists, the
surrealists broke accepted rules of work and personal conduct in
order to liberate their sense of inner truth. The movement
spread all over the world and flourished in America

Surrealism in the United States
(posted to www.marxmail.org on October 27, 2002)
A few months ago I posted an article about "Surrealism, Freud
and Trotsky"
I refer to "Surrealist Subversions: Rants, Writings and Images
by the Surrealist Movement in the United States." Edited and
introduced by Ron Sakolsky, this volume contains articles that
originally appeared in the journal of Rosemont's Chicago
Surrealist Group titled "Arsenal/Surrealist Subversion," and
kindred publications.
Rosemont first ran into surrealism in 1959 as a bored fifteen-
year-old high school student in Maywood, a Chicago suburb. While
browsing through a literature anthology, he ran into
Paul Eluard's surrealist proverb, "Elephants are contagious,"
which he found irresistible. He said, "The sudden appearance of
that wild image had an extraordinary impact on me. For me, those
three words opened the door to the wonders and possibilities of
language."
The development of movements of Black people, of women, of
prisoners ms important to the potential of surrealism....They
are living illustrations of how concepts which, at one point in
time, exist only as ideal thoughts, can become real and
materialized in people's lives. The destruction of old concepts
of beauty, of reason and logic, of emotion, of sexuality, of age
and time, and the creation of new ones in their places, is being
accomplished by mass numbers of people. New definitions of human
relationships and of human capacity, which surrealists in the
1920s and 30s were struggling for on a theoretical and artistic
level, are being lived by people today. These movements are the
realization of the potentials of the past, just as they create
new potentials to be fulfilled in the future.
Alas, I am afraid that this is far too much to expect from
revolutionary politics. I tend to think of the revolutionary
movement as the equivalent for our class of the vast array of
institutions that govern and enforce the bourgeoisie's class
rule, from the army to the CIA to the various think tanks that
promote the inevitability of capitalism. One does not get
involved with such outfits in order to have fun, but in order to
advance the interests of the class you are loyal to. This is the
function of the revolutionary party we need so desperately. To
achieve this goal, sacrifice and discipline are required. These
are characteristics that are not necessarily useful to those who
pioneering new forms of the imagination, but essential to those
going into battle for the future of humanity.

Elephant Vs. Putin
The gestation period of a Sri Lankan elephant is 22 months,
whereas Vladimir Putin became an elected official on March 26,
2000, or slightly over two years ago. Is there enough evidence
to say with any degree of certainty that the Russian president
has fallen behind the development curve? The eXile has charted
the progress of an elephant fetus and Putin at regular intervals
throughout the period in question, and we believe we have
uncovered reason for concern.

Back in the 19th century, three talented Russian writers got
together and invented a fourth - Kozma Prutkov. The fictitious
Prutkov became famous for his parodies written in various genres,
but above all, for his aphorisms.
"If you have a fountain, turn it off; let the fountain also rest,"
was one of his aphorisms. Another went: "If you read the word
'buffalo' written on an elephant cage, don't believe what you're
seeing."
Big bucks and power are the only things that count here. As for
ordinary people, they are just pawns in this game and only merit
any attention when there's a risk they could become queens.
But I still can't resist making a Prutkov-style appeal: "If you
have a fountain advertising a cage with an elephant, on which is
written 'buffalo,' turn it off ? let people rest a while."

His employment of war elephants that crossed the Alps to attack
Rome is an example of leadership, logistics and strategic

Most people remember Hannibal as the great leader of the
Cathagian Army. His employment of war elephants that crossed the
Alps to attack Rome is an example of leadership, logistics and
strategic generalship. Very few even know that he fought naval
engagements. However in 190 B.C., he demonstrated both naval
leadership and effective bio-warfare. In that year he won a
great naval battle over Eumenes II of Pergomon using bio-warfare.
Hannibal had earthen jars filled with venomous snakes, covered
and taken on board his ships. When the enemy ships came within
range, the earthen jars with the snakes were hurled at the enemy
vessels where they broke discharging their terrifying occupants
among the enemy sailors. The resulting chaos was effective and
Hannibal won easily

For those of you not in the habit of quoting Gimli son of Gloin
verbatim, let me explain that Gollum is a wretched, self-
absorbed creature, twisted by power, with an idiosyncratic but
charming manner of speech. At one point, brave honest hobbit Sam
Gamgee asks if in Gollum's restless wandering pursuit of the
ring he has ever seen oliphaunts (like our elephants but much
bigger), and Gollum replies, referring to himself in the third
person, that he "has not heard of them. He does not want to see
them. He does not want them to be." I say that same approach has
led Canada into a dishonourable dead end on Iraq.

An exotic creature, although not so fabulous as the mythical
unicorn or phoenix, Elephas the Elephant was one of the most
popular animals in the bestiary and had one of the longest
entries. Usually represented with a howdah or war-tower on its
back (the "elephant and castle" of heraldry) or entwined in the
coils of a dragon, it was though to be intelligent, gentle
(leading the lost wayfarer back to the road), possessing a great
memory, to live for three hundred years, and be afraid of mice.
When traveling together, it was careful not to injure its
companions with its ivory tusks, tended the wounded and
protected them in the middle of the herd, and used its trunk to
gather leaves to feed, hence the name proboscis,
"for the bushes."
Mating only once, the elephant was a model for human moral
behavior. According with the medieval ideal that sex in marriage
be for reproduction only, the elephant symbolized the paradox of
chaste marriage and conjugal chastity
Even the representation of the elephant in battle, with a
crenelated tower on its back, may have been intended to evoke
the Crusades, the notion of the Church militant doing battle
against the infidel, or simply the spiritual struggle between
good and evil.

Ms. Offman was inspired to make the film after reading
The White Bone, the best-selling novel by her friend Barbara
Gowdy. The novel, set in the era of ivory poachers 20 years ago,
follows Mud, an orphaned, telepathic baby elephant who is
adopted by a herd. Using the white bone that points the way, Mud
helps the herd search for the Safe Place, a haven from human
killers. Ms. Gowdy was enthusiastic about collaborating on the
documentary because, as she says on camera, "I want to get into
the minds of elephants, as much as that 's possible for a girl
from Don Mills."
Being in a truck with Barb every day surrounded by elephants was
like being on drugs," says Ms. Offman, with a laugh. "It was
funny, crazy, touching, and quite perverted at times" [because
of all the elephant sex going on.] "Then, when we got a little
loud, someone would warn us to be quiet because the elephants
were all listening with their big ears."

Not All the Lights in the Skies are Stars, May 11, 2002
Set in TunFaire, a city that was corrupt before dinosaurs ever
learned to count, P.I. Garrett's adventures among the magical,
the crooked, and the nasty (often at the same time) have been
entertaining readers since 1997. TunFaire is the gem of the
Karentine, a city where magic is generally bad news, racial
violence between species is a commonplace, and you can find or
buy anything if you have the wherewithal to acquire it. There
Garrett has set up shop with his partner, the Dead Man - who is
a Loghyr (think 500 pound telepathic elephant) who has been dead
for 400 years and alternates between messing with Garrett's mind
and taking naps.
Garrett does not lack for friends, if friends are what you would
call them. There's Morley the full time restaurateur and part
time crook, Saucerhead Tharpe, Dojango, Martha and Doris (the
last three are all guys... guy grolls, that is). Then there in
Playmate, a ministerial blacksmith who gets people like Garrett
involved in plots like the one in 'Angry Lead Skies.' Ostensibly,
Playmate wants Garrett to keep an eye on young Kip Prose, who
has suddenly developed the ability to invent things. Things like
tricycles, lead pencils, and weird gadgets with gears. It seems
like Kip has befriended some strange silver elves and, suddenly,
his head is full of ideas.
It doesn't take Garret too long to find out that the strange
silver elves and the saucers and lights whizzing around the
TunFaire skies are somehow related. And that too many people are
interested in Kip's sudden rush of inventiveness. Soon Gerrett
is neck deep in a chase that seems guaranteed to get him knocked
out every four hours. Soon, the attention of TunFaire's regular
cast of politicians and wizards turns to Garret's antics, and to
the ever-increasing numbers of a new kind of elf that shoots
back with a vengeance. The P.I. finds that there is always
somebody spying on him, visible, invisible, parrot or pixie.

I. The Courtship of Pink Elephant
Pink Elephant was a lonely soul.
Pink Elephant had nowhere to go.
Pink Elephant didn't know what to do.
Pink Elephant was in a stew.
Pink Elephant sat and Pink Elephant moped.
Pink Elephant felt like a real dope.
He wanted to have the time of his life,
So Pink Elephant went and looked for a wife.
Pink Elephant turned away from the West.
He said, 'The fourth try just might be the best.'
He searched, he gazed, and he looked again,
And then Pink Elephant saw the Hen.
The Hen was walking under the trees
Singing as loudly as she pleased
About her feathers, black as coal,
And all about her lonely soul.
'My gracious, but isn't that Elephant Pink'
When was the last time I had a drink'
There could have been something in my tea,
Perhaps a drop of LSD!
'I won't do all that ridiculous stuff!
I rule the Universe-- isn't that enough''
'I'll settle for that, I guess,' she said,
'Just don't let it go to your head.'
'My lovely Hen!' was the reply,
'You won't be sorry you gave me a try!'
Now we',ll let them go and have their fun,
Because this is the end of Chapter One.
At the beginning of Chapter Two,
We see Pink Elephant, and the Black Hen, too.
The past hours were just as nice as can be,
And now they're writing poetry.
Of course, my dear,' she says so sleek,
As she pecks him on the cheek.
'You go out and find a priest,
While I prepare the wedding feast
The water helps to clear her mind,
She says to herself, 'Have I been blind'
I won't make it myself; I shall look
For a caterer in the phone book!?
She finds a number; she dials it in;
Her call is answered by a voice of tin.
?Hector?s catering! What can I do
To make your next party a hullabaloo??
'Now then, for the vows: what shall they be'
Will you love one another as deep as the sea'
Will you stand by each other though it should mean death?
Will you, for your mate, give up your life's breath'?
At this, Black Hen uttered a small squawk,
And leapt into the air. Below her wings
There rested two small, perfectly round eggs
Each one unblemished, white. Pink Elephant
Gazed at them in fondness, and proclaimed,
'From us arise our offspring. They shall be
The essence of the mighty universe
Which within us dwells, and shall be seen
By all beings which you and I create.
Eternal are our children, and all worlds
Shall bow before one, the other, or both.
Thus it is proclaimed, and always shall it be.'
At this moment the two shining eggs
Began to quiver, humming vibrantly.
Within them could be heard a knocking sound,
And soon in violence the clamour rang,
And shatterTwo creatures which had visage so perfect
It cannot be described. Identical
Were they in all aspect and in form
And shimmering they stood where they were born.
'My children! Perfect children!' cried the Hen,
Your sire and I are no longer alone
To roam this empty world. A family
Has been created; the first ever made,
And it shall be so with all from hence:
They shall follow in our family's line.
Our fate shall also be their consequence.
