TOP OF THE NEWS: Single Sign-On Soars as Companies Focus on Cutting Costs
More companies are using Web-based single sign-on applications to enhance
network security. But a plethora of organizations are expected to embrace the
technology because of the promise of lower operational and administrative
costs.
"Companies with hundreds of thousands of employees will save millions of
dollars if they eliminate one password reset every two months for each user,"
Rob Lancaster, senior analyst, Internet business strategies, for the Yankee
Group, a Boston-based research firm, tells ECOMWORLD.com...

Peer-to-Peer Computing Loses Some Luster
Peer-to-peer computing—the sharing of computer resources and services by
direct exchange between systems—is not living up to its hype as a
revolutionary way for vendors to create revenue across a wide range of markets,
says Ovum Ltd., a London-based research firm.
While P2P will become an essential part of some enterprise product offerings,
generating real revenues will be more difficult, Ovum notes. Collaborative
knowledge management is the only area in which there is a sound P2P business

A Common XML Rights Language Standard Takes Shape
Members of the OASIS Extensible Markup Language interoperability consortium
are forming a technical committee to advance a common XML rights language
standard for the digital rights management marketplace.
The committee plans to provide a universal method for specifying and managing
rights associated with a variety of resources, including digital content and
Web services, across a variety of industries. OASIS' specification also will
support a wide variety of business models and express both simple and complex
rights, while promoting interoperability between systems regardless of
platform, media type or format...

webMethods Launches Financial Integration Applications
Integration software developer webMethods Inc. is launching application
suites for financial service industry initiatives. Products will support such
functions as enterprise Web services, business process management, workflow,
application integration, integration systems management and legacy system
integration.
Financial institutions have historically been leaders in adopting new
applications and technologies, including integrated customer relationship
management systems and Internet-based trading, webMethods says. But such tools,
the firm notes, often result in critical data being trapped in isolated legacy
applications and mainframe computers...

Palm Develops Apps For The Mobile Enterprise Sector
Palm Inc., a developer of handheld devices and mobile applications, is
rolling out its Wireless Database Access Server software to enable developers
to create wireless applications that access corporate databases in real time.
The WDBAS software allows developers to use familiar integrated development
environments, such as AppForge and Metrowerks' CodeWarrior, to create and
extend mobile applications so remote users can access corporate data
wirelessly. Developers also can build applications that access previously
stored data while offline...
