Thanks again. Mainly ones whose last listed postings were in Europe,
this time, including in London. Goodness knows what is going on. I
wonder whether this will get reported more widely now?

banana "The thing I hate about you, Rowntree, is the way you
give Coca-Cola to your scum, and your best teddy-bear to
Oxfam, and expect us to lick your frigid fingers for the
rest of your frigid life." (Mick Travis, 'If...', 1968)
> its difficult to say whats going on with these lists. the 1999 one was
>almost certainly tomlinson or a friend on his behalf,
Not sure about that. The force of the 'preamble' - naming officers
involved in the Princess Diana job - might have been greater if the long
list hadn't followed. He has suggested that MI6 may have done it
themselves.
>he hasn't been in
>mi6 since the 90s and he probably posted everything he knew,
Agreed - by far the most sensible strategy, it stops a person from being
classed as a threat.
>possibilities could be another mi6 renegade who hasn't surfaced yet and
>is trying to blackmail the agency over a pension or is bitter at not
>being promoted or he's been sacked. another possibility is a civilian
>is able to spot the tell tale signs of a spy under diplomatic cover by
>looking at his previous postings in the diplomatic list.this technique
>was also used in the 70s to spot cia officers. the interesting is are
>there going to be any more revelations? if its a discontented spook
>there may well be.
The 'Daily Express' recently reported acrimony between UK and French
officials with regard to investigating the Princess Diana crash. Unnamed
UK sources were quoted as saying the French inquiry was a shambles; and
unnamed sources close to the French inquiry were quoted as saying that
whenever they asked UK officials for something, the UK officials refused
to help. A case of 'what each side says about the other is true'? Also
it has been reported that UK investigators want to suss out the French
spook whom Henri Paul allegedly met shortly before the crash. I tend to
the view that there is substantial truth in the idea that there is
argy-bargy going on between London and Paris. Which would bode well...
A few days ago I thought the publication of the second list was to do
with Israel/Palestine, because a) the Israeli government has complained
about MI6 diplomacy towards Hamas, and b) many of the names have Israel
or the Arab region as the place of their most recent posting...
This was after originally thinking 'Rove/Plame'. But there hasn't been
much linkage in the media - or hardly any reporting at all, really -
which weakens the idea. There again, someone has pointed out that it
still might be of relevance in legal battles going on behind the scenes.
A civilian 'spotter'? Maybe... I doubt it, though. I think there's a
non-accidental answer to the question 'why now?'
Blackmail? I think this is likely, in the sense of applying and
increasing the pressure. Sort of like cutting off the ear of a kidnapped
person and enclosing it with the ransom demand?
I do hope it's a discontented spook!
But...it could also be a discontented group of spooks, in cooperation
maybe with other figures. There are major divisions over Iraq and more
generally, over UK policy in southwest Asia. MI6 must be running like
nutcases on a treadmill just to try to retain their position, in much of
the region. Might there be a connection with the 'letter of the 52'?
That letter began:
<http://www.stopwar.org.uk/article.asp?id=270404>:
>>>We the undersigned former British ambassadors, high commissioners,
>>>governors and senior international officials, including some who have
>>>long experience of the Middle East and others whose experience is
>>>elsewhere, have watched with deepening concern the policies which you
>>>have followed on the Arab-Israel problem and Iraq, in close co-
>>>operation with the United States.
It does kind of 'smell' as though there will be more to come.
These people - and others who did not sign (because still in office),
and the business interests they represent - must *not* like the idea of
what might happen soon in Jerusalem / Maale Adunim / Iran.
For the record, the names of the '52' are:

MI6 'man in Republic' exposed on Internet
Alleged British spy among those named on intelligence site
http://www.sundaylife.co.uk/news/story.jsp?story=658916
Exclusive by Ciaran McGuigan
28 August 2005
AN alleged British spy - based in Dublin during crucial peace process
talks - is among dozens of purported agents exposed by internet spooks last
week.
The list of more than 70 alleged agents based around the world, appeared on
a US-based website that specialises in intelligence matters.
It reveals details of their former postings and - more worryingly for
intelligence chiefs - their current locations in some of the most dangerous
areas of the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.
Supposed spooks based in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia,
Iraq and Iran are all identified in the list, which was sent to the US
website by a correspondent known only as 'A'.
The same material later appeared on other websites.
The material appeared at the start of last week, and late last week it was
unclear if British intelligence agencies, or lawyers acting for any of the
people named on the website, had made any attempt to have the information
removed.
On previous occasions, when the identities of security intelligence services
staff have been exposed, they have been moved from their posting.
The man named as being MI6's man in the Republic between 1986 and 1992 - by
which time links between the IRA and John Major's government were
well-established - is now based in Islamabad, in Pakistan.
He was in Dublin at the time of the Anglo-Irish storm over the 1987 murder
of Northern Ireland's second most senior judge and his wife, Lord and Lady
Gibson.
They were killed by an massive IRA landmine close to the border, and only a
short time after they had left their Gardai escort, prompting criticism of
lax cross-border security.
Eleven years earlier, the British ambassador to Ireland, Christopher
Ewart-Biggs, and a civil servant, Judith Cook, were murdered by the IRA in a
landmine attack near his official residence at Sandyford, Co Dublin.
It's not the first time that the names of alleged and former MI6 officers
have been posted in cyberspace.
Six years ago, former MI6 officer Richard Tomlinson was jailed under the
Official Secrets Act, after it was alleged he had given a long list of names
to a website.
And earlier this year the names of supposed MI6 officers working in the
Balkans at the time of the conflict there, were published by some Croatian
media outlets.

Surprised a photo was used in the article. I would have thought d-notices
would have been issued preventing such a thing. I can get the photograph if
anyone is interested.
Would have thought printing the photograph would have been in conflict with
DA-notice 5
www.dnotice.org.uk/dan5.htm
1. Information falling within the following categories is normally regarded
as being highly classified. It is requested that such information, unless it
has been the subject of an official announcement or has been widely
disclosed or discussed, should not be published without first seeking
advice:
(a) specific covert operations, sources and methods of the Security
Service, SIS and GCHQ, and those involved with them, including the Special
Forces, the application of those methods, including the interception of
communications, and their targets; the same applies to those engaged on
counter-terrorist operations;
(b) the identities, whereabouts and tasks of people who are or have been
employed by these services or engaged on such work, including details of
their families and home addresses, and any other information, including
photographs, which could assist terrorist or other hostile organisations to
identify a target;
(c) addresses and telephone numbers used by these services, except those
now made public.
2. Rationale. Identified staff from the intelligence and security services,
others engaged on sensitive counter-terrorist operations, including the
Special Forces, and those who are likely targets for attack are at real risk
from terrorists. Security and intelligence operations, contacts and
techniques are easily compromised, and therefore need to be pursued in
conditions of secrecy. Publicity about an operation which is in train
finishes it. Publicity given even to an operation which has been completed,
whether successfully or not, may well deny the opportunity for further
exploitation of a capability, which may be unique against other hostile and
illegal activity. The disclosure of identities can prejudice past, present
and future operations. Even inaccurate speculation about the source of
information on a given issue can put intelligence operations (and, in the
worst cases, lives) at risk and/or lead to the loss of information which is
important in the interests of national security. Material which has been the
subject of an official announcement is not covered by this notice.
> As for it getting more attention in the media here is a story that made it
>into a Northern Ireland tabloid. The print edition has a photograph of the
>man named.
Do they name him in the print edition??
For the record, he is William Geoffrey Sandover, details given as:
dob 1955; 81 Vienna, 86 Dublin, 92 Buenos Aires, 02 Paris, 04 Islamabad

Ciaran McGuigan has got that the wrong way round. Richard Tomlinson was
jailed in 1997 for sending a manuscript of his book to a publisher, not
for anything to do with the 1999 list of names. The day before his
parole ended, he was scared that his former employers were going to try
something, so he went abroad. While abroad, he was subjected to major
harassment by SIS, and the occasional beating. He further angered SIS by
giving evidence to the French inquiry into the Princess Diana crash. You

Then after getting thrown out of a string of countries at the behest of

Spy-busters reveal more Dublin-based agents online
By Ciaran McGuigan
04 September 2005
SELF-STYLED internet spy-busters have exposed the names of two more alleged
British secret agents working in the Republic.
One of men - identified last week on a US-based website that specialises in
intelligence issues, was in place in Dublin during the run up to crucial
peace talks in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is claimed he was later
posted to India, Saudi Arabia and is now based in Bahrain, according to the
website's anonymous sources.
The other alleged spook was based in Dublin in the early 90's after a spell
in Baghdad, it is claimed. He later went to Oman then to London according to
the site. The revelations follow an earlier list of alleged MI6 agents -
including another Dublin-based spook - was posted to the site last month.
As Sunday Life revealed last week, the alleged spy had to weather the
cross-border storm surrounding the 1987 murder of Northern Ireland's second
most senior judge and that of his wife, Lord and Lady Gibson. He later went
on to serve as an MI6 agent in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Other alleged agents based in some of the world's terror hotspots have also
had their cover blown by the website. The website also claims that former
Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown was working for MI6 while serving a
diplomatic posting in Geneva in 1974. Ashdown is currently top international
administrator in Bosnia.
