Union cash flowing into Quebec to fund prolonged student protests
----
Trade unions based outside Quebec have already confirmed sending more than $36,000 into the bank accounts of the province's largest student federations.
Union leaders in the rest of Canada say they're now asking their memberships to vote on new donations for the student groups.
In another gesture of support, several union delegations headed to Montreal for a large protest Tuesday, while sister events were scheduled in different cities inside and outside Canada, including New York and Paris.
The executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers said Tuesday that his union could approve a financial contribution for the students in the next day or two.
"We're actively considering it," said James Turk, whose association represents 66,000 teachers and other academic professionals across Canada.
Turk said there's added urgency to help out after the Quebec government adopted an emergency law -- Bill 78 -- last week that sets some restrictions on protests.
"We don't want the main issue obscured,
and that is the desire to have accessible post-secondary education," he said, referring to the issue that ignited the strike movement several months ago: the provincial government's plan to hike tuition fees.

Syrian Prisoner al-Sha'er Released after a Year of Struggle in Israeli Jails
----
The Syrian prisoner Fares al-Sha'er from the occupied Majdal Shams village was released on Tuesday after spending a year of deprivation and oppression in the Israeli jails.
The occupation authorities issued an unfair one-year imprisonment sentence against al-Sha'er after arresting him in August 2011 on charge of resisting the occupation.
In a statement to SANA, al-Sha'er said that he is determined to continue struggle side by side with the people of the occupied Golan who are firmly committed to their Syrian Arab identity and opposed to the occupation's suppressive and terrorist practices.
He expressed pride in the steadfastness of his fellows in the Israeli jails and their challenge against the arbitrary procedures taken by the Zionist jailers against them.

Insight: Jerusalem expansion reaches point of no return
----
Named for the crash site of an airforce plane shot down during the Six Day War in 1967, Givat HaMatos may yet prove the place where Palestinian hopes of a creating a capital in Jerusalem also plunge to earth.
'Airplane Hill' lies on the southern fringes of Jerusalem's city limits - rock-strewn land dotted with shabby, prefabricated bungalows and the occasional pine tree.
Once a tranquil backwater, the area has become the focus of hectic activity in the last six months, with Israeli authorities releasing plans for 2,610 housing units and 1,110 hotel rooms.
With the approval process going more quickly than expected, building could start later this year, creating the first new Israeli settlement in 15 years among the sprawl of a modern Jerusalem that is spread out over many hills.
If that happens, it would effectively cut off the city's mainly Arab neighbourhoods from Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, imperiling the Palestinians' prospects for establishing a coherent capital and with it their goal of an independent state.

Remarks of Islamic Emirate [of Afghanistan] regarding the ostentatious and inconclusive Chicago conference
Excerpts
----
disappointment was echoed in all statements and in the end remarks[,] mixed with repeated words which have been exhausted and listening of [= to] which was pointless,
for instance; America and its allies will pull out all its combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, residual force for training would remain !!? everything else is progressing along fine and some other empty, inconclusive, deceptive and far from reality claims.
That it was pronounced again at the end of the summit that most of the occupying forces will leave Afghanistan but some would remain as trainers and advisors to prolong the occupation, this is neither the solution for solving the problem nor is it an acceptable option to the Muslim Afghan nation.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,
as the representative of its people,
would like to state that the fundamental solution is[,] that all the invading troops withdraw as quickly as possible.
Leave the Afghans to their own decisions.
Another thing worth lamenting is that the constant ongoing death of innocent civilians in Afghanistan caused by the American night raids was [>] never even mentioned [<] in the summit. The internal issues of Afghanistan such as the rampant corruption, state terrorism, insecurity and the plight of people due to increasing poverty were also [>] not [<] addressed.
We believe that vain ostentatious conferences, preoccupying media outlets and telling short lived lies to their own nation and the people of the world has lost all credibility and cannot alter the ground realities in any possible way.
The fact remains that here lies an independent nation and an independent people. Subjugating this nation is an elusive dream which...[has] never been realized throughout history.
So if America and its allies still want to keep deceiving and temporarily distracting the people from the fundamental problem then they must realize that the people have now become familiar with their wavering policies, they are not going to play along and neither has the world agreed upon eternally giving precedence to America.
It would be beneficial if time is not wasted here, nations are left to their won decisions, dreams of invasions and occupations are disregarded and the people of the world especially the Muslim nations and their sanctities are treated with respect.
Such actions have the potential of solving the core fundamental problems. Erase brutality and depravation and turn towards international peace.
If on the contrary you insist on war, hypocrisy, fraud and deceiving members [= your own peoples] then without a doubt,
problems shall multiply
and nations are prepared to defend their religion, country, life, wealth, sanctities and honor and resort to all viable options on the table to attain their goals.

Minju Joson [newspaper] Accuses Former U.S. President of His Monstrous War Crimes
----
The War Criminal Tribunal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia...held a hearing on torture and war crimes [from May 7 to 12] committed by Former U.S. [Superpower] President Bush II and his seven assistants .
This clearly shows the will of the international community
[>] not [<]
to pardon those who committed hideous war crimes against humanity no matter how much water has flown under the bridge
Still fresh in the memory of world people are the shuddering human rights abuses perpetrated by U.S. [Superpower] troops in Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq and Guantanamo naval base, shocking the world.
These being hard facts, Bush II did not assume any legal responsibility for those hideous crimes against humanity.
But he is still at large
though he earned an ill fame as a hideous war criminal
and
the U.S. [The Superpower], the world's worst human rights abuser and chieftain of genocide, is busy waging "an anti-terror war."
This cannot but be a tragedy of the international community.
Both international law and the UN Charter have no provision stipulating that the U.S. [The Superpower] cannot be brought to an international tribunal as [since] it is a "superpower".
In the international community each country is equal and the U.S. [The Superpower] is just a member of this community. The U.S. [The Superpower] deserves a stern punishment if it committed crimes against humankind.
It [the international community] will certainly judge on behalf of justice the U.S. [The Superpower], [>] the root cause [<] of all the misfortune and sufferings on earth.

Insight: EU foreign policy chief Ashton stays out of the spotlight
----
As the head of EEAS [the European External Action Service], set up in 2010 to develop a common foreign policy and build an EU foreign service, Ashton has one of the trickiest jobs in Europe. The foreign service has the potential to give Europe a bigger voice in the world, but has had to contend early on with a sovereign debt crisis that has made many Europeans wary of closer integration.
She drew instant suspicion when appointed.
Stefan Lehne, an Austrian diplomat now working at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, is typical of those who remain skeptical, saying the new service needs to do more than just react. Although Ashton may lead meetings of EU foreign ministers efficiently, he wrote in a recent report, "in terms of agenda setting and overall leadership of EU foreign policy, there are considerable deficits."
One motivation behind the project is the dramatic shift of world economic power towards Asia, and a growing focus by the continent's traditional minder, the United States [The Superpower], toward the Pacific. Alone, individual European states will struggle to influence global affairs, from military intervention to financial regulation.
"Scale will matter in the 21st century," says David O'Sullivan, the EEAS's Chief Operating Officer. "Individual western countries will struggle. If Europe is to be relevant in the 21st century, it will be so only as the EU."
