36 people slain in bloody year: From gang slayings to beatings, city
records its second-highest number of homicides

EDMONTON - Last year was not the worst for homicides in Edmonton's
history, but it was close. Thirty-six people died at the hands of others
- -- less than the record-setting 39 of 2005, but still more than in other
Canadian cities of similar size. Here's a look at the year's homicides:
1 Eric Ellefson, 28, was found in a truck parked near 122nd Avenue and
61st Street on Jan. 7. He had been shot in the head. Darren Gary
Rowland, 25, was charged with first-degree murder. The charge was
withdrawn because of a low chance of conviction.
2 On Jan. 8, 25-year-old Tony Tom was stabbed outside of an apartment
building at 91st Street and 106A Avenue. Jamie Hunt, 23, was charged
with second-degree murder.
3 Jason Anthony Kaye, 28, was beaten and left in an alley near 107th
Avenue and 96th Street near his rooming house. The case is open.
4 Omar Mohamed Abdalla, 19, was shot in an apartment at 115th Street and
108th Avenue on Feb. 12. The murder was gang-related, and has not been
solved.
5 Juanita Cardinal, 27, and another woman were stabbed in a fight at a
home at 96th Street and 81st Avenue on Feb. 26. Cardinal later died. The
file has been closed with no charges laid.
6 Stefan William Conley, 35, was beaten on a city bus on March 2. The
bus was near 94th Street and 20th Avenue at the time. Four male teens --
three 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old -- were charged with manslaughter.
7 Brian William Marsh, 49, was assaulted and stabbed in a rooming house
at 104th Avenue and 95th Street on Jan. 7. He died three weeks later.
Colette Margarette Yatchotay, 20, and Beryl Rita Scotty, 27, were
charged with manslaughter. Yatchotay was acquitted in November; Scotty's
trial continues.
8 Jerry Nguyen, 25, was found shot in a home at 155th Avenue and 46th
Street on May 29. The murder was gang-related and the file is open.
9 Bryan Murray Lee, 35, was shot multiple times in an alley near 33rd
Street and 116A Avenue on June 13. The file is open.
10 Michael Robert Rieger, 37, was shot near 92nd Street and 34th Avenue
on June 18. Rieger was connected to the Hells Angels. The file is still
open.
11 Shawn Michael Yalowica, 19, was shot at a karaoke bar at 99th Street
and 34th Avenue on June 20. The shooting was gang-related. The file
remains open.
12 Darren James Cardinal, 26, exchanged gunfire with police officers in
a home at 68th Street and 128th Avenue. One officer was shot and
Cardinal was killed.
13 Jaret Lee Severight, 29, was found shot in an alley near 103rd Street
and 100th Avenue on July 1. The file remains open.
14 John Paul Jones, 44, was stabbed in an apartment near 119th Street
and 43rd Avenue during a domestic dispute on July 6. The case has been
closed with no charges laid.
15 Nadine Creary, 35, was found dead in her home at 139th Avenue and
32nd Street on July 20. The cause of her death has not been released.
The file is open.
16 Matthew Alexis, 22, was stabbed in an apartment suite at 82nd Street
and 109th Avenue on July 22. Shane Christopher Arcand, 28, was charged
with second-degree murder.
17 Dung Tri Tran, 35, died when shots were fired from one vehicle to
another at 107th Avenue and 112th Street on July 24. The murder was
gang-related. No one has been charged.
18 David Dotto, 22, was run down by a car on Aug. 18. Dotto and friends
had been in an argument with the driver of another car at a red light.
The other driver followed them until they got out of their car at 104A
Street and 48th Avenue. A 15-year-old male was charged with
second-degree murder.
19 Cody Bull, 28, was found stabbed in front of an apartment building at
156th Street and 102nd Avenue on Sept. 9. Jolie Amy Panegyuk, 29, was
charged with second-degree murder.
20 John Albert Buckniak, 21, was found stabbed in a field near 40th
Street and Hermitage Road on Sept. 9. The file is open.
21 Lily Duong Tran, 23, was shot in her car at 76th Avenue and Argyll
Road on Sept. 9. Two men in her vehicle were also shot in the
gang-related attack. The file remains open.
22 Evangelina Almeida, 85, was found dead in her home at 161st Avenue
and 57th Street on Sept. 15. Her 86-year-old husband, Joao Almeida, has
been charged with second-degree murder.
23 Nyibol Chuol, 27, was stabbed on Sept. 6 in an unknown location. Her
body was found 10 days later in a ditch near Yellowhead Trail and Range
Road 222. Her husband John Both, 41, has been charged with second-degree
murder.
24Cleophus Delorme McGilvery, 60, was beaten on Aug. 12 near 101st
Street and Princess Elizabeth Avenue. He died on Sept. 26. The file is
still open.
25 Sherry Lavery, 50, was smothered on Sept. 27 in her home on
Millbourne Road East near 41st Avenue. Her husband, 78-year-old Noel
Lavery, was charged with first-degree murder.
26 Shane William Chalifoux, 18, was stabbed on Oct. 1 in an apartment
suite at 95th Street and 102A Avenue. Eugene Michael Falle, 32, has been
charged with second-degree murder.
27 Varnado Stobbs, 28, was shot outside the Gingur Sky nightclub at
118th Avenue and 155th Street on Oct. 6. The file remains open and is
gang-related.
28 Josh Hunt, 16, was stabbed at a house party at 28th Street and 44th
Avenue on Oct. 15. A 17-year-old male was charged with second-degree
murder.
29 Russell Ross, 52, died in hospital on Oct. 24 of head injuries
sustained in a beating days earlier near 96th Street and 107A Avenue.
Three teenage males -- two 16-year-olds and one 14-year-old -- were
charged with assault causing bodily harm.
30, 31 & 32. Jacey Pinnock, 27, Thomas Orak, 19, and Dave Persaud, 21,
were shot at the Red Light Lounge near 100th Avenue and 105th Street on
Oct. 29. Dwayne Anthony Nelson, 22, was charged with three counts of
second-degree murder.
33 Evan James Grykuliak, 17, was stabbed at his own birthday party at
the La Perle Community Hall at 186th Street and 97A Avenue on Nov. 19. A
17-year-old was charged with second-degree murder.
34 Dylan Cole McGillis, 23, of Lloydminster was stabbed on a sidewalk at
Whyte Avenue and 106th Street on Nov. 19. The file remains open.
35 Kim Peter Arseneault, 51, was found dead in his home on 107th Street
and 107th Avenue on Dec. 19. He died from a blow to the head. His
roommate, 31-year-old Roy Robert King, was charged with manslaughter.
36 Marilyn Elaine Badger, 52, was found dead in her home at 165th Street
and 106th Avenue on Dec. 24. An autopsy could not confirm her cause of
death, but police found signs of an assault. Curtis George McCallum, 32,
was charged with second-degree murder.
