JFK and the Unspeakable by James W. Douglass is a fine new book on the case.
Douglass is a prominent Catholic theologian, and a longtime assassination
researcher.
In this book, he provides an excellent discussion of JFK's peace
initiatives, and postulates that those who favored "tougher" Cold War
policies used the CIA to kill him.
He draws on many of the newly-released documents and presents some incisive
analysis of both new and existing documentation.
Some have asked for documentation of the false defector program--it is here.
Douglass provides a devastating discussion of Ruth Paine.
He documents that anti-Castroites brought, not a handful, but a five or six
inch STACK of leaflets to Oswald.
He also found documentation that the CIA routinely created Secret Service
credentials, an interesting detail considering the false Secret Service
agents in and around Dealey Plaza.

Good point, Martin. We might be inclined to ask the CIA why it was
that they or their allies had a need for SS IDs.

The difference between Douglas and Bugliosi is the former has a
conscience, and he shows repeatedly how JFK wanted to avoid war at all
costs in Vietnam, Laos and Cuba with time and time again intelligence,
key advisors betraying him and his policies culminating in an inevitable
coup.
