Adding insult to injury, adult film star Johnny Sins thanked former Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, for new Twitter followers after the latter, in an epic, gaffe, re-tweeted a picture of the porn star, passing it off as a Kashmiri pellet gun victim.

The Ex-Pakistani High Commissioner to India got severely trolled after he re-tweeted a picture of the adult movie star, mistaking him to be a Kashmiri protester who lost his vision due to pellet injury.

The location is Peshawar, the capital of the most conservative province of Pakistan, and the men are watching a porn film, right under the nose of the religious political parties, the Taliban and the government.

In this province and, in particular, in Peshawar, the music shops and cafes are often the targets of bomb attacks by religious extremists. Advertising boards that show women are regularly torn down. But surprisingly, in this repressive climate, adult cinemas still manage to prosper.

"Every showing is full," says Lala Fida Mohammad Khan, a former movie producer who got out of the conventional film business because "no one wanted to watch clean films, they don't sell anymore." Mohammad Khan now manages a small cinema in Rawalpindi, a town near the capital Islamabad.

In Peshawar, the Shama cinema belongs to the Bilour family. Some members of the family belong to the Awami National Party, a left-wing party with secular tendencies that holds a majority in the province. "They had three cinemas, one of which was attacked several years ago," said Mohammad Khan. "They then turned two of them into shopping centers, and the one that's left shows pornographic films."

"Pollywood," the Pashto language film industry that produces these movies, has always been known for its erotic and pornographic content "even though other genres of films used to be produced as well," says Aijaz Gul. The industry slumped over the past couple of decades following a peak in the late 1970s. Scriptwriter Younus Qiyasi has about 20 films to his name, but he decided to give up filmmaking in the 1980s, after "vulgarity and obscenity had become its trademark features."

Mohammad Khan remembers Pollywood's golden age nostalgically. The screenings would sell out days, or even weeks in advance. And most importantly, women were also amongst the cinema-goers. "There was of course a strict separation between men and women, but at least the women went," he recalls. But now, with this type of film, even if it's not porn, no woman would dare to enter the semi-darkness of the Peshawar cinemas.

That is the town where Enrique also sets the internal fire that he now considers the pillar of his freedom to express his sexual orientation and his art as a film and theater actor. Enrique is known for playing the main character of the film, Jósé, which was released in 2018.

It tells the love story of two young homosexuals and is directed and written by Chinese director Li Cheng, who said in an interview that he decided to film in Guatemala and with indigenous Guatemalan actors, after an investigation he did on the most homophobic and racist countries in Latin America. Enrique sees this film production as a way to make the indigenous LGBTIQ+ community visible.

The Kaqchiquel Mayan academic and gay filmmaker, Marco Chivalan, points out that Mayan gay people are seen as a minority within the LGBTIQ+ community, as a non-existent group and he considers that this is also a type of racial violence. "I prefer to say dissidence and not diversity. This is a Western term and it does not fully reflect our existence as dissident people," says Marco.

The incident happened when the commentators were talking about some of the highest wicket stand between batters for the 10th wicket. Mr. Bazid accidentally referred to Danny Morrison as adult film star Dani Daniels. Even the actress retweeted the viral video.

Last week, another Indian multiplex chain, PVR Cinemas, shared the announcement of the release of the movie on its website, before taking it down. It is unclear whether the film will still run at its cinemas, but the incident underscored the political risks Indian companies and individuals face when engaging with Pakistani counterparts.

But far-right Indian political parties have threatened to protest if the film is released in India. Ameya Khopkar, a leader of the Hindu nationalist Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), said earlier in December that his party will not allow the movie to be shown in India.

Despite the popularity of Pakistani films, dramas and its burgeoning music scene in India, Pakistani artists have often struggled to reach their fans across the border, especially since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014.

Speaking about the potential release of The Legend of Maula Jatt, Rafay Mahmood, a Karachi-based film critic and culture commentator, said it is important to remember that India had not formally placed a ban on the release of Pakistani movies or casting Pakistani performers.

Johnny Sins, the adult movie star whose photo was retweeted by former Pakistani High Commissioner to India as a victim of pellet guns from Kashmir, has thanked the latter for helping him get new followers on Twitter.
