I want a laptop! I can't afford to buy a new one from one of these
places like Dell but would love to build one cuz that's much cheaper for
me and fun.:) Where would I begin? Where would I find parts like new
motherboards, CPU's, Video Cards (I think they're built into the MB
right?), and the cases? I found a place where I could get a older case
for a couple of hundred dollars but can't seem to find motherboards and
CPU's unless they're a few yeas old. I'd like to build a 600mhz-700mhz
laptop. Is there a site I can read hat has all the info or something?
Thanks.

It cost less to buy a laptop.

Unless you buy one as a "kit", you can't simply buy the parts and build one like
you can for a desktop PC.

robbie, if you do end up getting a dell laptop, you can save some money buy
buying ram
elsewhere, www.crucial.com is where place i got my numbers from
this of course assumes you aren't satisfied with the bare minimum amount

you will have to do the math yourself to figure out how much you can save,
b/c it depends on how much ram you want in the end

but if you want an inspiron 8000 with 512mb of ram, you can save $640!

in the case of the value priced model, the inspiron 2500
the base is 64mb, 1 dimm
it takes $200 to upgrade to the 128mb in 1 dimm level the dell way
but you can get a crucial brand 128mb stick for $50
put that in with the original 64mb stick and you will have a total of 192mb

so you spend 1/4 as much and get more 1.5 times more ram upgrading it
yourself!

maybe it's some people already knew you could do this, but i was quite
suprised when i stumbled upon this idea

since you want to build the whole thing, i'm sure you'd be comfortable
changing a SODIMM....

in case you are interested, the bare minimum laptop you can get from dell is
a 700mhz inspiron 2500 for $999, which is only $899 after the $100 rebate
you can even save $10 more if you skip the floppy drive
and shipping is only like $35

Good idea! I'm all about saving money. I built a 700 Duron system in the
Jan. of this year and come to find out I can build the same system for
half the price now! I'm building a few for my some friends and trying to
save as much as I can from that money to buy a Dell laptop but started
to think "why not build one" and I started to look around and couldn't
find any motherboards for it so I decided to ask if you could. I guess
I'll stick with the Dell.
