you will have to do the math yourself to figure out how much you can save,
b/c it depends on how much ram you want in the end
but if you want an inspiron 8000 with 512mb of ram, you can save $640!
in the case of the value priced model, the inspiron 2500
the base is 64mb, 1 dimm
it takes $200 to upgrade to the 128mb in 1 dimm level the dell way
but you can get a crucial brand 128mb stick for $50
put that in with the original 64mb stick and you will have a total of 192mb
so you spend 1/4 as much and get more 1.5 times more ram upgrading it
yourself!
maybe it's some people already knew you could do this, but i was quite
suprised when i stumbled upon this idea
since you want to build the whole thing, i'm sure you'd be comfortable
changing a SODIMM....
in case you are interested, the bare minimum laptop you can get from dell is
a 700mhz inspiron 2500 for $999, which is only $899 after the $100 rebate
you can even save $10 more if you skip the floppy drive
and shipping is only like $35
