My pc has 2 x 256mb PC2100 DDR SD RAM in it and space for two more. Can I
add PC2700 DDR RAM or PC3200 or do I have to keep to PC2100?
TIA

Read you moderboard specification to be sure. There is noted how many RAM,
and wish type.
Otherwise check on internet when you wish your moderboard type

N.B. Bad english but try to help you

you should be able to use the chips, be sure that the larger Mhz chip is
in the #1 slot.

I've never tried this, and I wouldn't recomend it, even if it is
supported, which I doubt.

Imagine the tires on one side of your car spinning faster than the ones
on the other side. What a mess that would be right?

Well the similarity is that just as all tires drive 1 vehicle, all the
sticks of RAM form 1 memory address pool. Because the memory forms 1
"pool" the CPU won't try to access that data faster than any component
can handle it.

It appears that some of those that answered did not know what they
were talking about.
One can certainly use faster memory, but it is not practical and it
is not cost effective.
Clocking rate of RAM does *NOT* depend on the speed of the RAM; it is
controlled by the bus speed (which may or may not be selectable in the
BIOS).
It is best to get more PC2100 RAM, and as large as the motherboard
can accept.
So if the motherboard can accept 512Mbyte RAM, then get two or four
sticks and "toss" the 256Mbyte sticks.
I put that word in quotes for a reason.
If you actually toss them out, then Murphy may sneak in and requier
you to need that memory for some reason or another.
However, if you satisfy Murphy's cousin, Justin Case, then wrap that
RAM in aluminum foil and store it where you cah *find* it.
This will tend to keep Murphy away.
I joke some above about Murphy and JustinCase, but at times things
*seem* to work that way.
***
Make sure that you are grounded and the case is grounded (but *not*
plugged in) when you get inside to make the changes.

Yeah that'd be a huge mess. Unfortunately (for you) we are talking about
computers and RAM. RAM has no moving parts in it. In the future, I would
recommend that if you have no idea what you are talking about, don't hit
the reply button.
