Amber light on front of Dell tower

I get a amber rather than green light on the front of my Dell tower and the
computer will not boot up. The fan runs at super hight speed, much faster
than normal, but computer does not come on. When I boot up the computer it
might come on properly but many times if won't boot up. Runs fine for
awhile, then the amber light comes on again and the hi speed fan thing. If I
leave the computer off all night, it will ussually work fine. I've taken off
the side to the tower and blown out dust. It's acting like it is
overheating and then shutting down, but it doesn't seem to be all that hot.
And with the side off, it's even cooler.

Any ideas?

What model Dell?
I have a Dimension 8400 also known as the "leaf blower" by many owners,
check out any forum and you will find the same problem with that model and
nobody seems to have found a cure for all cases. I changed my CPU cooler for
a new Dell one and mounted another fan on it but it made no difference at
all, unfortunately Dell use their own stuff and proprietary coolers don't
fit the Dell motherboard.
The case fan on mine gets louder with use but it never dies down again when
left at idle, only ever gets louder. Only a restart will bring it back to
normal quiet mode then it all starts again getting louder until I do another
restart. It's unfortunate that Dell insist on using such noisy fans too.

I'm assuming you have updated your BIOS to the latest for your model
available free on the Dell site. I know they updated the BIOS for my PC to
overcome the noise on some, unfortunately not mine.

Thanks Bob-

But you didn't mention the amber light in the front of the tower and fact
that my computer won't start up with the amber light. When my computer is
working(with the green light on on the tower)the fan is normal, and quiet
actually. But when the amber light is on, the fan goes high speed and
louder. Does your's do that? Any info on that?

But I'll be searching forums for more info.

Thanks Bob.

There is the normal "On" light on the front together with the Hard Drive
light which usually flashes when you are using the PC, if it's the On light
that is sometimes amber sounds like you may have an intermittent power
problem.
There should also be 4 lights on the back of the tower which are diagnostic
lights and tell a lot about problems depending what ones are doing what,
look at your Dell manual for examples.
Have you also tried using the Dell Diagnostics which should be on your Hard
Drive or on a Dell Resources CD that came with the PC?
