I recently noticed that my C drive was running out of space and
then discovered that the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder had close to 300
Megs of stuff in it.

I opened some of the files there using WordPad (but they weren't
text documents) and realized they recorded a lot of the internet
traffic. For instance, I found a record of a 500KB text document
that I had uploaded to my website. I also noticed that after I
had uploaded a few MP3s to my Yahoo Briefcase, the size of the
TEMP folder increased proportionately, presumably because it's
keeping copies of those uploaded MP3s.

Is this normal? It seems that the TEMP folder is wasting a lot of
space on my hard drive. It also alarms me that somebody could
theoretically monitor what I do online by examining the files in
the TEMP folder.

I use Netscape Communicator. Are these TEMP files generated by
Netscape Communicator?

Applications use temp files in the same way that you might use a notepad on your desk to scribble little bits of info and reminders.

Not all applications clean up after themselves.

From the start menu choose "RUN" then type "cleanmgr.exe" and you will see how to clean up temp files on your system.

Many programs create files in the temp folder - they are tempory files!
Go into the folder and delete everything that you know you do not need
eg the files you recognise and know you have stored somewhere else

Windows itself uses "temp" files to keep track of things while it is
running (like what your desktop looked like before you maximized those
last three windows) -- look for files with a ".tmp" extension. If you
fail to shutdown properly, Windows cannot clean up its .tmp files
properly. If you just turn off the power while Windows is running,
those .tmp files will stay in the temp directory and will accumulate
over time, sometimes into the hundreds and hundreds until it finally
chokes your hard drive. So how in Microsoft-think do you shut down
properly? With the "Start" button, of course!

Uh huh. You can go to Edit... Preferences... find the Advanced category
and go to Cache. There you'll find Clear Memory Cache and Clear Cisk
Cache. You can also do it from Windoze Explorer by going to the Netscape
folder,Users,*username*,Cache and delete anything in that folder.
