Is the American market also dead?

Here in England, it used to be that every day would be 5 -10
enquiries from agents even when I was otherwise gainfully employed
and so could not take up the offers.

Now it can be 2 -3 weeks between enquiries, and those enquiries
are only for permie positions.

Is America "recessionised" in the same way, I wonder?

About 15 years ago, I started keeping a file of brokers/agents from whom
I received calls. In each case, I would record the date of the most
recent contact and its status at that time (e.g., there was no match, I
wasn't available, the broker was going to talk to the client and get
back to me, etc.).

I just reviewed this file and found that there are a total of 43
brokers/agents in the file. There are 2 for whom the most recent date
of contact was after 2000. This means that I received contacts from 20
times as many brokers/agents during the period of 1994 through 2000 than
I did during the period of 2001 through 2008.

I'd be interested to hear whether things have been similar for other
consultants.

I don't work through brokers, but inquiries from prospective clients
were way down from Thanksgiving (late Nov.) until just recently. I
picked up another short term client recently and one of my existing
clients has had a flurry of activity.

A couple of other people that I've talked to recently have indicated
that things are finally starting to pick up.
