I have an old computer and about to get a new Dell system next week. I want
to teach my kids what a virus does, etc by infesting one on my old computer.
Anyone who can direct me on how to get a virus or downlaod one would be
apprecaited. I don't care what kind of virus it is......thanks

you cannot "show you kids" how "a virus works" there are many different
kinds of virusses with many different kinds of payloads.

Ahh. Okie...

Go here: http://sok4ever.zone.ne.jp/Raid and feel your way around. Once
you hit the right spot, click and you'll be taken to the virus archives
center. Where you can download whichever virus it is your wanting.
Toadie seems to be a popular pick (according to webserver logs)

Toadie is the virus that Avers have seriously made a big stink about.
NAI went so far as to create a ..gif warning it's customers. They even
created a toadie virus support center off their website, which promises
to contain the most recent data, Except it doesn't. There's 5 viruses
in the Toadie series; NAI knows about 4 of them.

Some people in here would prefer you had no access to viruses, But they
sure as hell don't mind giving you access to their products. Double
Standard wouldn't you say?

I love reading your advice, It cracks me up.

You can demonstrate how a particular type of virus functions, Enough to
show what a virus is anyhow. Go back to reading your assembler books
freddy, You have alot to learn.

I think most people in this newsgroup don't have a problem with people
writing viruses on their home computers and *keeping* them on their home
computers if they wish. After all, it's rather like your right to smash
all the windows in your own house if you want to.

Where I have a problem with is when people indiscriminately allow viruses
to be downloaded. This kind of web distribution of malicious code doesn't
help anyone in the computer community.

Nope.

Dell? Ahem... ;-)

I don't think this would be a very helpful way of educating your kids
about computer viruses. Various anti-virus companies have written helpful
tutorials on what viruses can do, and how to protect yourself, which would
be much more educational I suspect than letting loose a genuine virus.

But what if the programmer wants to share his creation with people who
just might take an interest in that sort of program? Hmm...

See, Graham, that's your problem... You are too concerned with helping
people. I say, fuckem. If they can't help themselves, they shouldn't be
breathing, Myself included.

Most people are worthless anyway, I don't see why you'd even want to
waste your time with them.

Sharing the creation with people who "might" take an interest isn't
acceptable, because there are a lot more people who "might" not. If you
want to show off your virus programming skills invite your friends who are
impressed with such things round for tea and crumpets. They can all
huddle around your computer and be impressed if they want to be. Make an
evening of it, put on a Matt Monroe CD, prepare a charming meal - bob's
your uncle.

People aren't so bad y'know. Once you've had students ringing you up
desperate to recover their course work, or little old ladies no longer
able to email their grandchildren in Australia, all because of a virus
your perception soon changes. It's rewarding to help people with their
virus problems, and other problems too.

I hope one day you'll reconsider your actions, and come to recognize the
benefits of helping the computer community more rather than causing harm
to it.

please don't troll for viruses here, it encourages the uncontrolled
distribution of viruses and that enables people to spread them
maliciously...

Hmmm... there are a few points:
1. we cannot verify what your real intention is. After all, you might just want
to infect your neighbor's computer.

2. Take into consideration that being computer literate doesn't mean that you
are also capable of handling viruses properly. You could accidentally spread the
virus.

Depending on how old your children are, you should just tell them to follow a
few basic rules:
- Use a good virus scanner. Better, use two good virus scanners.
- Update the virus scanning engines AND the definitions regularly. Personally, I
check for updates every single day.
- Scan all new software immediately before using it. This also applies to Word
and Excel documents, or any other file type that can contain code.
- Immediately delete unsolicited email attachments.
- Disable scripts in email and news messages.

PS: The AVP Virus Encyclopedia for DOS is able to show the graphical payloads of
some viruses. I believe the project was discontinued, though. I haven't seen any
updates for the DOS version in a while, sadly.
