Friday 5. july I registered the new 204 version of McAfee Virus
scanner for Windows 95 (v95i204l.zip). I have a big problem with it.
When I start scanning it starts up normally, but several times during
the scan it slows down, after a few files (50-100) it speeds up again.
Then when reaching the end of the scan (ca. 2000 scanned) it halts
with a error message reading:

SCAN95 caused an invalid page fault in
module MCSCAN32.DLL at 0137:10013fb6.

I then removed the scanner (with Windows own ADD/REMOVE function) and
installed it again. I re booted the machine as told by the scanner on
install and when up again I started a scan. The same happened again
with following error message (almost the same)

Second try (after removing and reinstalling):

SCAN95 caused an invalid page fault in
module MCSCAN32.DLL at 0137:10013fb6.

I have also tried to deselect the compressed file scan without any
result.

What could the problem be? Previously I had version 201 (Reg.) and it
worked without problems. During all of this VSHIELD is active, could
that be it?

BTW:
Data in the ABOUT menu of the scanner:

Serial Number: E417-K3ZJ-BG4L
Virus definition: 2.2.9606
Created on: 11.06.96
Scan engine: 2.5

PS! A warning:
6th of july i sent a problem report to McAfee and didn't get any other
response than the automated one's. I read these and resent the problem
report with the appropriate headers and still didn't get any response.
I then sent an angry message (flame-like) and they asked what the
problem was. I answered ant haven't heard anything since.

If this is McAfee's idea of service i wouldn't recommend the scanner
to anybody.

As far as I can tell, that's typical of McAfee. I sent them a request
via their mailto: form at their web site and didn't get any reply for
almost a month. The reply I got was an "undeliverable mail" auto-
message. I'm not impressed with their customer support (and after
reading this newsgroup for a while now, I'm not very impressed with
their anti-virus software, either.)

[Relating a crash with 2.04 and lack of communication with tech support...]

I'm sorry about your tech support experience.

However, we've just released version 2.05 which addresses a number of
bugs and viruses. Perhaps your issue has been addressed.

I doubt if anyone except a McAfee technical support person could help you
with this. You'll just have to persist. The name of the man in charge
there is Bill Larsen, if you can get his attention, you'll get action.

In fact, maybe a list of the names and email addresses of useful people in
each AV company would be a useful addition to the faq?

But then, the useful people would become useless, since they'd be swamped
with e-mails. :-)

So we update the list.

His name is Bill Larson.

And yes. If you get his attention, you'll get action.

In many cases, I should suffice as I can determine who should handle it.

In this case, I'll sign with my official title.
