I've fought a lot of viruses over the last few years at the corporate level,
but now I'm running a home PC service company. For the first time, I
believe I have a user who has had a XP system at home with no virus
protection. They thought they had virus protection, but they had was a link
to try McAfee's online scanning. There are several symptoms that make me
suspect a virus, including McAfee will not install, Norton Utilities 2002
will not run from CD. But the unusual symptom is when you press
cntl-alt-del to bring up a task window, the window closes again by itself
before you can even take a good look at it. Any thoughts?

You can select any of several on-line scans from there.

Klez does that for sure, as well as terminating certain virus scan
processes.

It was indeed a variant of the Klez. Symantec's Klez cleaning tool got the
job done and I installed updated virus protection for her.

I know there are some stupid people who frequent this newsgroup. But
surely there is none so stupid as to follow Gavin's advice?

Advice? Where in his post did you see anything remotely resembling
advice?
