Some stealthy virus could conceivably go completely unnoticed by
scanners. It is not until they become noticed by some other means, that
they become known to the AV scanners. If a virus were to "lay low" for
extended periods, it would be less likely to be noticed in the first
place.
It's a legitimate concern (considering what viruses are), but I won't
stay awake tonight worrying...
