Try fixing you PC clock first !

It isn't April yet.

Yeah. Have you ever tried changing the clock without a mouse?

Further details::

I am pretty sure I have some nasty trojan here. The mouse started freezing
on screen and I have to work through keyboard only.
Now some keyboard functions are also disabled.

I reformatted the partition I use for systems, reinstalled Windows 2000, and
reestablished my e-mail and internet connections. I would have figured that
would eliminate any modified drivers and system files.

Well, I still have it.
I am running AVG and ZoneAlarm firewall and they detect nothing.
What I need now is suggestions about what I can do to locate what is doing
this. Reboot brings back mouse for short time, but then freezes again.
Help! and thanks.

Plug in a borrowed mouse. If the error is gone, replace the old mouse for
good.

i have... mouse keys are a wonderful thing...

short of that you could do it through a command prompt...

it would have... it wouldn't have made an ounce of difference for a
hardware problem, however...

I have changed the mouse (in fact, that was first thing I did). Freezes with
other mouse, too.
I'm afraid this is software problem.
I have skinnied down all registry Run to just ZoneAlarm and AVG.
It's still happening.
It even happened in Safe Mode (which I started after cleaning registry of
bad entries).
This is very bad since we NEED that mouse!
I need more ideas of what to try.
My biggest shock is that reformating the partition and reinstalling Windows
still has the same pattern of freezing after some number of clicks. On some
occasions it also stops me from using left and right arrow keys (up and down
still work) and the ESC key doesn't function. Weird.

Did you try to get along with your mouse without AVG and ZoneAlarm?

Did you have your system checked by an online scanner as McAfee,
BitDefender, or Symantec?

a hardware problem isn't necessarily and accessory problem... when you
tried a different mouse was it also a different *kind* of mouse - by
that i mean if your first mouse was PS/2 did you try a USB mouse and
vice versa... the hardware problem might be in the computer itself (the
circuitry for that particular plug for example), not necessarily in the
mouse...

mice aren't as necessary as one might think - i had to give up using
mice due to some strain injuries i got in my hands from overdoing it at
work - mouse keys and keyboard short-cuts are good enough for the most
part once you get things tweaked to your liking...

and that is why i very much doubt it is a software problem... you
eliminated all the software and re-installed a fresh OS... unless you
hooked it up to the net without a firewall or without hardening the
system (disabling unnecessary services, making sure all administrative
accounts have strong passwords, removing unnecessary sharing, etc) then
there can't be any malware involved...

Okay, smart people. I replaced the mouse driver (generic) and switched
to a Compaq mouse (PS/2) and everything seems to be holding.
I feel a little dumb doing all this work for a hardware problem --
especially when that's the first thing I thought of and tried.
Now I've decided I deserve a new mouse; one of thse wheel scrollers;
and a new mouse pad; why not?
As soon, of course, when I get finished reinstalling all my necessary
software ....[now where did I put my Visual Studio disks?]...

Thanks to all of you who kept telling me what to do.

Because mouse pads make the rollers dirty.

Go optical, use a trackball, or use a piece of masonite for the pad.

Even a chunk of cardboard off a pad of paper is cleaner than a mouse pad.

Lost without a mouse?

This works on my Win98 machine:

ctrl+esc, s, c, d, enter, ctrl, tab (to select field), use arrow keys
to change values, tab until apply has focus, then enter.

Hopefully something similar for other versions.

Neat.....works with WinME, but only got up to 'd'......eerie, wasn't going
further, grin.

Actually, I could have used keyboard lessons when this one was down and for
some reason my Win95 mouse wouldn't work. You are not just a pretty face,
my lad!!

Sometimes the keyboard is the quickest way to do things, I use
ctrl+esc, u, s, enter ... and just walk away - rather than mouse
to Start - Shut Down - Shut Down - Okay - which requires
that you wait for the displayed buttons before you can click on
them.

Hey, that is good too. I just tried the start of it. Somewhere I have
reams of pages on keyboard commands that one of the MS MVP's sent
me......must find it. Of course, Elayne uses them on her Mac.....no right
click with those babies.

Best......Heather

Which reminds me: I once had a mouse-cleaning pad. In fact, it wasn't a
pad, it was a table mat, made from cork, which was supposed to be placed
below a plate (to keep the heat off the wood).

Still, this mat worked great, rubbed the smudge off my mouse, and
provide a nice large flat space for my mouse. Sadly, it broke in the
end.

Thanks for the tip (and the obvious that I missed). It is a little
different on W2K, but it still is reachable through the control panel.
On mine it is
ctrl-esc, s, right-arrow, c, enter, etc. ...

3 months typical with energizer duracell or radio shack batteries. All
others seem to last less but are lighter in the hand.

I just got used to having a heavy mouse :P
