Is this a virus - worm? Help appreciated.

Fot the past month when I'm doing something on my computer generally surfing
the net, every now and then all these different windows starting opening
very quickly. After about 10 seconds it stops and then I have to close all
these other windows (programs) individually. Is this some sort of virus or
worm. I use AVG anti-virus but that's not fixing the problem. Any help would
be appreciated. Regards
