The main problem with losing OE is the historical mail. Do any of you smart
people out there know of a less virus-prone POP mail client that can have
multiple mail boxes/accounts and most importantly-- IMPORT old messages from
OE?
Please don't bother suggesting full blown Outlook, I ain't jumpin the OE
frying pan into the Outlook fire.
TIA
Stella

Just be sure to disable the MS Viewer for the preview pane.

There is ofcourse mozilla which will import outscratch express email. The
email only component that is called firebird is it? at www.mozilla.org
anyway.

This is a fequent question over in alt.comp.freeware, and there are
several. Google.
Having a hdd fail with a bunch of valuable stuff in it is NO fun. You
have backed up your e-mail to a CD-R, or something? Makes playing with
replacement e-mail programs a lot less stressful if you can't erase
the e-mail.
Actually, the e-mail only stand alone client you're thinking of is
mozzila thunderbird. Firebird is what they used to call the standalone
browser before they switched that to firefox.
--
If it don't work, hit it.
If it still don't work, kick it.
If it works after that, than it doesn't matter if that helped, what's
important is it works.
firebird is/was the browser only component... the one you're thinking
of is thunderbird, which handles email and newsgroups...
firebird has since been renamed to firefox, btw... perhaps that means
less confusion in the future...

I have always used ether OE or Outlook, and have yet (knock on wood) to
be infected with a virus or Trojan or malware which I encountered via my
OE/O. All it takes is a little common sense; because no mater what email
program you use (unless it doesn't allow attachments) if you open an
attachment you are open to virus/Trojan/malware.
To be as secure with OE/O as any other email program simply turn of the
preview Payne and set it to read your email in text only mode, and if you
can't trust your self to *not* open attachments set OE/O to *not* all
attachments to be opened or saved.
I have found that 99.999999% of the time the problem with *any* email
program security is less the program and more the user

I totally agree with you. And at home I use OE, text only mode, hubby knows
not be clickin' attachments, no sweat.
Here, I am actually scouting out email proggies for the boss's computers.
As idiot proof and OE-like as possible please ;-)
Thanks to everybody who replied, some excellent suggestions and some
programs i would not have found from Google.

Yes; Eudora can do that. When Eudora imports mail from OE, it splits
out the email attachments to the location you set (defaults to an
ATTACH directory within the mail location, which by default is where
Eudora is installed in Win9x and within the user's data tree in XP).
This is very useful when formally cleaning up an infected PC; it's the
only way to really clean the existing mail store.
The same Eudora download can run in three different modes:
- Paid; full features
- Sponsored; full features, ad window (uses Cydoor ad engine)
- Light; reduced features, no ads
There are two ways to operate different user accounts within Eudora.
You can use shortcuts to route the same Eudora installation to use
different mail data locations. Each will not see the contents of the
other, and this approach works in all three of the above modes.
Or you can use one mail data location common to all accounts, using
the "Personalities" feature to manage multiple mail accounts. This is
more familiar to OE users, but requires Sponsored or Paid mode.
There are four locations you want to manage when using Eudora:
1) Where the program is installed
This you choose when you install the program in the usual way.
2) Where the mail data is stored
This is passed on the command line that evokes Eudora, and can also be
set during the installation process (it's the next dialog box after
where you choose where the program itself is installed).
By using different shortcuts to Eudora, you can use different mail
data sets as referred to above. A typical shortcut command line:
C:\Program Files\Qualcom\Eudora6\Eudora.exe C:\Email
The name of the directory in which the mail data resides appears at
the top of the mailbox heirarchy when running Eudora.
3) Where attachments are directed
First, create the location where you want attachments stored. Then,
having installed Eudora, go Tools, Options and set that to point to
the location you created. If the location doesn't exist, Eudora will
default back to an ATTACH within the mail data set.
4) Where inline attachments are createsd
This is also where MIME-spoofed attachments go. Unlike unpatched OE,
Eudora won't autorun these, and it doesn't link to them either - so
effectively, MIME-spoofers are auto-quarrantined. The location is an
EMBEDDED in the data set, and is held in the registry; to change the
location, you'd chase it up via RegEdit.
It's important to set (3) and (4) before you import mail from OE (when
prompted to import mail settings, do so, but choose only the address
book and not the mail data at this stage). Links to the attachments
are forged when the message arrives (or is imported) using the
settings that are in effect at the time, so first set these before
going File, Import to pull in the mail data itself.

Sounds interesting. Do you know if Pimmy will work on a Windows 98 computer
after using IEradicator? Thanks.

>It is common, and no doubt good, advice around here to dump Outlook Express.
I recommend The Bat! It also doesn't do HTML, handles multiple
accounts very well (I have five), can import/export, has strong search
capabilities and excellent template possibilities, and is supported by
a very helpful user discussion list.
>It is common, and no doubt good, advice around here to dump Outlook Express.
I also would recommend The Bat! www.ritlabs.com I switched from OE
about 3 years ago and have never looked back.
