Why can't the Palm work as a telephone dialer? With thousands of add on
programs out there for the Palm, what prevents it from dialing (or from using
an additional pieceof hardware to do it)?

It's speaker! The speaker is just not powerfull enough to dial a phone
number. That's why everybody wants a better speaker.....

Not being an electronics maven, maybe someone could tell me: would it be
difficult to replace the built-in speaker of the pilot with a more powerful
one?

Current speaker (piezoelectric device) may work but...

Touch tones are a high and low frequency generated at the same time when
you press a key on the keypad of your phone. Electronics in the pilot
are not up to generating two different frequencies at the same time.

For an excellent but lengthy explanation of exactly why Pilots don't
do DTMF, see Peter Strobel's (author of Battery Monitor and EcoHack)

Although it might be cumbersom, why couldn't their be an add-on like the
talelight, digital compass, or modem. I would hope that the serial port
could control it and also that the case could be much smaller than the
compass or modem.
