My experience -- I've never had any problem with the IIc in the car, then
again, when I use mine in the car, it's usually close to dusk. Unless you
have a convertible or a moonroof you should be cool. Outside, in bright
sunlight, at high noon, it's *nearly* impossible. You can sort of make it
out by turning the brightness up to max and shading the flip screen. The
greyscale palms are absolutely much, like 300% better in daylight -- but
around dusk, it's difficult with or without backlight.

This is the IIIc's only problem area, except for the graffitti going
south. My opinion but... the one thing I'm not liking is straining to
see my palm while driving down the road, and no matter how you slice
it, using the cover to shade it, or turning brightness up full, it's a
nightmare (or daymare) to see the thing. So, If you want to use it in
the car primarily, do not get a IIIc period. Again, my opinion!!
Agreed. I used a IIIc connected to a GPS for a trip from Texas to New
Brunswick and it was only useful if I held the IIIc down by my knees during
the day. At night, mind you, it was great as a handheld flashlight :) When
I was driving it was impossible to use because you had to tilt & squint at
it so much. OTOH, a monochrome device would have had the opposite problem;
it would have been impossible to use at night without the backlight, which
would have drained the batteries rapidly.

I have found the following helps
- use in a shaded area, under a tree, awning, bus stand out of direct
sunlight. (direct sunlight makes it almost imposible to see)
- turn brightness up.
sitting in a shaded area out of direct sunlight and brightness turned
up works very well for me.
