I'm considering buying a Palm IIIc but I'm hearing that it's difficult to
see
in daylight. I'm not too concerned about outdoor use, but what about
daytime
use inside a car? Is it still hard to see? Are the color WinCe or PocketPC
devices the same in bright light? I don't know anyone who has a IIIc and I
highly doubt if a local store would let me take it out to my car and test
it.
So tell me, are they totally unusable in daytime or just hard to see? Are
the
greyscale Palms that much better in daylight? Thanks for any advice.

I just purchased a Palm IIIc and have used it quite a bit in a car during
bright days. If I turn it up to full brightness, I've never found it
impossible to read the screen. You may have to turn it a bit to shade the
screen, but it is still quite usable, IMO. It's kind of the opposite of
the monochrome screens, where I usually found myself turning the Palm in
dimly-lighted areas to pick up enough light to see it.

I have had a IIIc for about 1 year now. It is true that in bright light you
have to turn up the palms screen to full brightness in order to see it, but
it is also true that, for me, this is one out of 20 (max) incidences of use.
For me the color screen is far superior to the old screen as in most
scenarios where I use the palm I am not in direct sunlight. Its fine to use
in a car assuming you don't have the sun blazing down on you while using it.
After having the IIIc I could never go back to the other screens. The CE
color screens can also have problems. The Casio is more useless in bright
light while the Compaq has a color screen which is very usable in sunlight.
So, bottom line, the IIIc is hard to see in bright light but not totally
unusable.

My experience -- I've never had any problem with the IIc in the car, then
again, when I use mine in the car, it's usually close to dusk. Unless you
have a convertible or a moonroof you should be cool. Outside, in bright
sunlight, at high noon, it's *nearly* impossible. You can sort of make it
out by turning the brightness up to max and shading the flip screen. The
greyscale palms are absolutely much, like 300% better in daylight -- but
around dusk, it's difficult with or without backlight.

Using it in a car should be ok unless you have a topless ;p
what you can do it to use the flip cover to shadow the display when you're
using it outdoors.

Let me put it this way....I own both a IIIxe and a IIIc. Inside I use the c
and outside I use the xe. Can't see the IIIc in the car or outdoors. Love'em
both, but IIIxe wins the outside vote. Hope this helps.

You have to find a spot where the light is not strong. It is still viewable but
just still not easy to see.

This is the IIIc's only problem area, except for the graffitti going
south. My opinion but... the one thing I'm not liking is straining to
see my palm while driving down the road, and no matter how you slice
it, using the cover to shade it, or turning brightness up full, it's a
nightmare (or daymare) to see the thing. So, If you want to use it in
the car primarily, do not get a IIIc period. Again, my opinion!!

Agreed. I used a IIIc connected to a GPS for a trip from Texas to New
Brunswick and it was only useful if I held the IIIc down by my knees during
the day. At night, mind you, it was great as a handheld flashlight :) When
I was driving it was impossible to use because you had to tilt & squint at
it so much. OTOH, a monochrome device would have had the opposite problem;
it would have been impossible to use at night without the backlight, which
would have drained the batteries rapidly.

I use my Palm IIIc a lot during the day.

I have found the following helps
- use in a shaded area, under a tree, awning, bus stand out of direct
sunlight. (direct sunlight makes it almost imposible to see)
- turn brightness up.

sitting in a shaded area out of direct sunlight and brightness turned
up works very well for me.
