Actually, the shortcut works perfect for me. Shortcut dot dot 8, right? My
Palm IIIx works rather like the Palm III, with a better screen.

There are some Hackmaster Hacks that allow one to reverse the backlight. Try
Lighthack or GadgetHack (which has many other nice features)

I had the same problem when I replaced my Palm III with a Palm IIIx.
I just hotsynced my new Palm IIIx on a different computer with the new
and "empty" Palm Desktop installed and copied the
"Graffiti_ShortCuts__.PRC" (from the backup directory) to my "old"
computer with my "old" Palm Desktop, then I did a hard reset on my
IIIx and Hotsynced it with my "old" computer.

I believe that the ".8-command"only exists in the new
Graffiti_ShortCuts__.PRC....
