Thanks for taking the time to read this.
I am looking for peoples opinion on which model to buy, if at all. I
really want to be able to take notes while in class on the Palm so
here are a few questions I have, 1. is the handwriting recg really
good enough to keep pace with me if I am writing at a fast pace? 2.
Am i wasting my money on the IIIx for the extra memory or would the
III suit my needs. Honestly it will be used mostly for note taking
which averages about 10pgs a day. My final question is how many
programs will the III hold with my other demands, Okay here is the
final question, honestly what is the difference between the IIIx and
the V, besides size and a regarchable battery?
THanks in advance,
Michael

Much though I love my Palm I wouldn't use it for serious note-taking. I
certainly can't get enough accuracy at anything like the speed I would have
needed in the far-off days when I was in your situation - it really isn't
intended to be used that way. Maybe others have achieved this, though. I
strongly recommend you try any handheld you are considering for something
like this before spending money.

If you do decide on a Palm, though, regarding your other questions:
The screen is more readable on the IIIx than the III, but I'm sure either
would be acceptable. You can add memory later to a III if you need to. The
number of programs you can get on any Palm obviously depends on their size.
My palm IIIx is not half-full with over 40 apps and a large number of
appointments and contacts. My wife has an original Palm Pilot 1000 with only
1MB and has about 20 progs on it. Most Palm programs are very small! For
detailed info in all the different Palm models you should take a look at

For handwriting recognition you can also try add-on software such as JOT
from CIC, for me this recognition is better than what's built into the palm
(graffiti).
You should not only consider the IIIx for the extra memory but also for the
better screen.
If you don't need more than 2MB memory I would go to the V otherwise
consider the IIIx or the Vx (8Mb and faster chip than the V).

i doubt that you could accurately take 10+ pages/day of notes using
graffiti or any other handwriting enhancement.

if you are a decent typist, the gotype keyboard might speed up your
data entry.

I'm a grad student and I use my Palm IIIx & GoType! to take notes
in lectures, as well as when I'm doing library research, or writing
drafts for my thesis. It hasn't let me down yet!

I'd forget about getting the speed you need out of Grafitti or
Jot, though. The necessity to write each letter as a separate stroke
is really crippling. Its OK for small things of course, but I wouldn't
dream of trying to take good notes using it. FYI, I use SmartDoc for
notes and DiddleBug for any illustrations I need to do. I have them both
mapped to function keys on the keyboard so my switch time is minimal.

The memory probably isn't an issue, but the *screen* is. The IIIx has
a much better screen than the III, and is reason enough to upgrade (I went
from a Palm Professional to my IIIx, basically just for the screen.)

IMHO, the only thing the V has going for it is its smaller size. The
rechargeable battery is a flaw (IMHO!), not a feature -- I far prefer
being able to drop in a pair of AAA's when I need to, rather than worry
about whether or not I remembered to leave the Palm in its cradle over night.

Add to the fact that at a student's income, a IIIx is a heck of a lot
cheaper than a V or a Vx and the answer becomes pretty clear.

I've ordered a Visor but I won't be giving up my IIIx until LandWare's
Visor-GoType! is released (probably next summer).

To sum up, my advice would be to get a IIIx and a GoType. It's compact,
(relatively) inexpensive, and easy to set up & maintain (unlike a laptop).

I would recommend adding the KeySync keyboard by iBIZ Technology... this
would make your typing much easier!

I disagree with you my Brother,

I used to think that too, untill I mastered Graphity ---once you learn that
you'll me writing messages at least as fast as through the key board.

AND, you won't have to carry around a keyboard.

Larger memos can be done through your PC and synced to the Palm.
