Any COMDEX news about palmtops/PDAs/pen computers, other than the MS/CE
announcement? Do USR/Palm or Psion have booths at COMDEX? Are many
attendees or booth workers using handhelds?

Thanks,

I have been searching for news also. The news that I have been able to
discover is...
there is no news. I have found one article that mentions the pilot at
Comdex and all it contains is the announcement by USR of the lower prices.
So basically it looks
like what USR is doing for the pilot for Comdex is to lower prices and
offer Comdex attendees an exrta $25 off a pilot purchase. Any news will I
suspect be leaks from
people at the booth in responce to direct inquiries.

In the PDA business, a sudden lowering of prices generally means that a new
model is not far away and they are attempting to clear out stocks of the
current one.

If they're planning a new product intro, they had better do it ASAP or
miss out on the Christmas buying frenzy. Moreover, you would think
they'd be starting to "hype" the new product in the early-adopter press
to build demand. Well, that's basic marketing theory. I hope
USRobotics heeds it!

If they're going to put out a new model, they had better do it real soon
to take advantage of the Christmas buying season. If they wait or are
delayed, they're missing out big time. Also, you would think they would
start "hyping" a new model in the early-adopter target media to
stimulate demand. There are no advantages to just "springing" a product
on a market. Of course, this is all elementary marketing theory and
USRobotics might ignore it.

Ever hear of the "Osborne effect"? Company leaks rumor of new
product before it's ready to ship. Customers stop buying old
product. Due to negative cash flow, company goes bankrupt
before new product ever gets to market.

As long as an old product is still selling well at a profit,
it's better to not kill off all interest in buying it. The
fact that they're not preannouncing probably means that Pilot
1000/5000's are currently selling quite well.

And I'd thank them for that. I bought my Pilot about three months
ago. And the most surprising thing about it is the Pilot sold itself!
I saw it on the fronnt cover of a discount computer supplies
company, read the blirp inside about five times and decided this would
do exactly what I needed. When I arrived I started to use and play
with it and found it did a LOT more than I suspected.

Unlike a certain Redmond, WA based company; USR doesn't have to hype
its products and go for mind-share. They provide excellant products
for reasonable prices. (Oops, I'm starting to sound like a TV preacher!

It certainly does. Since I've bought mine, 6 other people at work
have bought them - not because I bragged about it, but just after
watching me use it.

I've been skeptical about PDA's being practical to use. Several people at
work have a variety of PDA's... Newtons mostly. Three have Pilot's and prefer
it over Newton for size and simplicity. I am now ready to get a PDA - but not
because its a new and cool technology, but because it's a practical tool that
I will use.

That's why I like my OmniGo 120. Sure, HP tried like hell to cripple the
underlining GEOS operating system, but I've found ways around that. Now I can
run pretty much any GEOS software on it, which includes destop publishing,
database, or whatever. Plus I can run DOS applications if I have to. It does
require a big honking flash disk, though. But, the speed is still good, and
GEOS' generic user interface means that most software fits fine even on it's
dinky little screen. Being able to use the pen or the keyboard completely
interchangable is a plus, too.

I can access my CompuServe mail, keep a huge database of contacts, play games,
and pretty much everything I can do with my desktop. (except run windoze
stuff)

The same happened to me. About 8 people bought them.

Similar story here. I started looking into the Pilot, grabbed the co-pilot
and was playing with that. Everyone else in the office started getting
interested. When I placed my order, one other person in the office placed
his; another tried to go with the $185 deal but was denied and will now be
placing an order through regular means; and a fourth person will be ordering
his after the holiday season is through. So far, that's 3 pilots beyond my
own.

I've also noticed remarkable interest anywhere I go when I start to use my
pilot. Unfortunately, most normals seem to thik that such a tool should be in
the below $100 range and are disappointed when I tell them it's between $200
and $300. Personally, I find that incredibly cheap. Go figure. :)
