Is anyone out there using a GPS and mapping software? I am considering
the purchase and am curious about how it's working for others. I have a
Personal PalmPilot and am wondering if I will have to upgrade for more
memory to be able to handle the GPS and maps.
Thanks

Memory could be a problem for you. I just tried Solus Pro w/ Garmin
GPSIII and PalmPilot Pro w/ OS3 upgrade (2meg Mem). Only used it for a
day or two and decided the software did not add any significant
functionally. Recall from memory(mine) is that the application was about
300K and the map I created out of SA6 was about 250K. Other GPS control
and mapping software could be smaller in size. Usually the downside to
smaller is less functions or less detailed maps.

Your mileage vary. :-)

Personally the maps totally suck.
A- they have no detail
B- they are not iteractive, just one big compressed picture with leads
to C-
C- Not only are the maps big in size, the need to be decompressed,
which means you need a lot of free memory to view them.

Note- I'm using Delorme(sp?) Street Atlas 6

It's not going to be like your desktop computer with all the hardware
resources.

Could be the result of what you were displaying at the time. Only two
level of zoom, but the screen size & resolution seems to be the limiting
factor.

Takes ever more memory on a limited memory platform.

I don't know how the code is written, but with a long route there is
three levels of detail. The main body of the route (low detail) the
starting & ending point (higher). Compression allows only that amount of
memory to be used related to what the operator is looking at. Seems like
a plus to me. I don't like that the main body of the route is a
rectangular box fitting over the starting and ending points. I would
prefer that the mapping of the main body of the route were 2-3 miles
either side of the route. On the other hand the data base organization
may not allow that kind of data extraction.

I don't think it's the best game in town, but with a GPS receiver that
has no map database or no front panel (earthmate/tripmate) for $40 not a
bad deal, just not a great one.
