Hi there guys. I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience of
replacing the HDD in a 5400/180 i.e. has this been straightforward or are
there any issues I should know about before embarking on this. I'm also
thinking about adding a second HDD to my own G3/266, again the same
questions - any known issues or problems I should look out for. One last
thing can anyone confirm for me that both these drives are IDE as opposed to
SCSI?

Thanks in anticipation

I agree - they're both ide.
the 5400/180 has an integral monitor so i wouldn't recommend doing it
yourself as monitors can store 1000s of volts even after they've been
turned off. apart from that, no.

if you want to check about teh hard disks, have a look at them before
you buy your new ones, it'll say on the outside.

all the best.

For HW spezifications of Mac OS compatible computers and their supported Mac
OS versions I find
http://www.everymac.com/
extremly useful.

I've replaced the original 850 MB Apple (manufactured by Quantum, no
"Master" / "Slave" jumpers) IDE on a PowerPC Performa 5200 (75 MHz 603) by a
not Apple IBM 6 GB IDE - against the advice of the Apple dealer that sold
that Mac to me many years ago (he thought that a HDD bigger than 1.2 GB
would need more power than the power supply is able to provide).
It works fine for more than 2 years now. (The IDE controler on that Mac only
supports one device - the 3rd party HDD must be jumpered as "Master")

If Apple's Drive Setup is unable to initialize a 3rd party HDD drive I can
recommend HD Speed tools from:
http://www.IntechUSA.com/
No matter if IDE or SCSI I have not yet had a HDD it couldn't support -
their CD/DVD Speed tools got the Plextor UltraPleX 40max (Narrow SCSI) to
excel in another Power Mac of mine.

Dear Karen,

okay, this was nearly 13 years in the past but do you remember how you got the old disk out of your PowerPC without damaging the PC nor the disk? I just need to get the HDD off and do not need to replace it.

Cheers
