When I went to reconcile one of my bank accounts in Quicken Personal
Plus 2002 Second Edition, Ver 9.11 (Australian Edition) I was
confronted with the following message from Quicken:

"Reconciliation Notice
The total of the previously cleared items in your register no longer
matches with the ending balance of your prior statements. This may
indicate that a register entry that was previously reconciled was
deleted or modified.
Quicken can help resolve the difference.
1. Click 然esolve' and Quicken will list all of the statements
recorded for this account.
2. Look for a statement that shows a balance discrepancy.
3. When you find one, click 然econcile Again' to re-reconcile that
statement. Or click 羨djust Register' to bring the balance difference
to zero for that statement."

There are three options associated with the Notice, "Resolve", "Help"
and "Ignore".

If I click "Ignore", I can complete the current reconciliation without
any problems. However, the next time I do a reconciliation, the Notice
re-appears.
If I continue to press "Ignore" each time I do a reconciliation, I am
concerned that I am working without knowing what errors exist in the
account.

If I click "Resolve", and then re-reconcile the first of the "Prior
Statements" where the error occurs, I am unable to clear the
discrepancy. In fact the error occurs in the opening balance of the
account and is the only entry to reconcile. The entry is not on a
separate statement, but is the first entry on the first bank
statement. I can only speculate as to why Quicken shows this entry as
a separate reconciliation.

When I allowed Quicken to make an adjusting entry, it added an amount
to the account that made the final balance incorrect. When I deleted
this adjusting entry, the discrepancy appearing in the "Prior
Statements" increased and an additional entry appeared in the "Prior
Statements" dialogue box.

The current bank statement is only the second one for the account. I
have deleted all the "Clr" status marks in the Quicken register and
reconciled the account again. Although the information in the "Prior
Statements" dialogue box changed, the discrepancy remains. How can I
correct the situation and prevent the "Reconciliation Notice" from
appearing, particularly when I know that the register entries and the
bank statements agree?

Looks like the reconcile bug is in the Aus. version, too.

see this post:

http://makeashorterlink.com/?F121211D1

In the US version, if a transaction is edited, it will affect any
accounts to which the transaction was split. e.g. assume a paycheck
deposit includes a split to a savings account & that savings account
has been Smart Reconciled. If you edit the checking transaction, the
checking account will still Smart Reconcile OK, but the savings
account transaction will be removed from its Smart Reconcile batch.
It will still show "R", but isn't in the batch where it was originally
reconciled.

In the US version, the Notice window you describe displays each Smart
Reconcile batch & the individual and cumulative differences for each.
Hope the Aus. version does, too.

If you're fortunate enough to be able to id the transactions, you
might be able to manually change their status to "c", save, &
re-reconcile the statement(s).

If you can't id the transactions, Peter's method, described in the 1st
post of the link above, will preserve your reconcile batches prior to
the one where the error occurred.

As an alternative, if you're certain your balance is correct, the US
version will allow you to reset the Smart Reconcile feature by saving
the status of any Smart Reconciled transaction to something other than
"R", then changing it back.

I've also had this occur a number of times with Quicken 2002 and 2003.
I resolved this by deleting the the most recent reconcile batches
until I got to the one that showed the "discrepency". I deleted that
one and reconciled.
Good luck. Ali

Bartt,

Many thanks for your reply and the links you provided to further
information.

I think I have solved the problem by using the alternative method you
mentioned in your reply. Specifically, I went to the following link:

http://www.intuit.com/support/quicken/2003/win/7010.html

where the question as to why the Reconciliation Notce appears is
answered and a procedure to resolve the discrepancy is outlined. It
involves changing and saving the "Clr" status of a transaction until
finally, when you try to save the "R" (Reconciled) status, it warns
that the Smart Reconcile feature will be disabled for the existing
account. Knowing that the Quicken register and the bank statements
were in agreement, I accepted the opportunity to turn the Smart
Reconcile off. Now when I try to reconcile the account there is no
notice of a discrepancy.

For anyone interested, the heading over the information at the link
above indicates the solution is for Q2003, but it appears to have
worked for Q2002.

Thanks again.
