I know I'm using an old version of the software, but it is really all I
need. However Intuit is not allowing me to register Quicken 98 and they want
me to upgrade to a newer version and pay them $80.
I'm getting the message that I can only use the software 10 more times
before registering. This is software I paid for in 98 and it sucks (because
they feel I need to upgrade) that I have to give them another $80.
Is there any other way to get a customer number & continue using the
software?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Malcolm

Thus was discussed here very recently. Have you moved Q98 from another
machine. If so, someone else said that there is an ini file
(quicken.ini?) that contains your registration information. Also, I'm
not sure anything bad happens if you do not register.

Sorry I missed the other thread.
I formatted the HD and upgraded my OS to Windows XP. I guess that means I
can not retrieve the old .ini file. There is no backup because I was
planning on starting from scratch.
The message given leads me to believe I will not be able to use the program
without registering it, but if the message just goes away all will be well?

Has anyone else tested this?

Thanks,
Malcolm

Someone has, but not me. You may want to search older messages for
this information. It is always a good idea to backup your system. Even
a very old backup would have the quicken.ini file.

As far as I know - based on Intuit's web site - it has never been
required to register Quicken except for using certain capabilities,
which all, if I recall, have to do with Quicken.com.

There are two things you can try to eliminate the registration nag:
hold down CTRL+SHIFT then click Finance > One Step Update; or open
Windows\Quicken.ini in a word processor (notepad will do), find the
"[Registration]" section, and change the value in the "Registration
Count" parameter to a large number (it is now 231 in my file).

Thanks for all of the help so far.

Here is an update,
Going into the Quicken.ini file does allow me to reset the number of times I
am allowed to open the program before registering, however, it counts up
instead of down. So, approx. every 20 times I open the program I will have
to go back into the .ini file to reset the counter. A mild inconvenience I
suppose I can live with (it still sucks).

What I am wondering is, there is also a Customer ID # listed in the
registration. Does this have anything to do with the number they are asking
you to enter for registration? The number is very long
(C47E313ECE9201008A675416A722CDAB) so if it does it would only be a portion
of it.

For the record, Quicken will not (after 20) if you do not register.

If anyone has any other ideas on bypassing the registration, please let me
know!!!

Thanks again,
Malcolm

I knew that Quicken "counted up" (my count is now up to 233); though
that, by itself, does not preclude benefitting from placing a higher
number there.

Can't help you here.

I assume you mean "Quicken will not" *start* "(after 20) ...", and I
assume you mean "20" starts without being registered.

You did not say what happened when you tried CTRL+SHIFT Finance > One
Step Update.

Also, I just took a very quick look on eBay, and found Q2001 deluxe
for sale for $8; I use Q2001 and I like it, and I don't see how one
could argue with the price.

I couldn't find Finance anywhere?
Where are you when you're using this?

In Q2001 deluxe for Windows, the Quicken menu bar (all screens) has
the following, starting from the leftmost choice:

File | Edit | Finance | Banking | Investing | ....

It is that "Finance" to which I was referring. It certainly is
possible that Q98 was not arranged the same way. Do you have a "One
Step Update"? Anywhere? If so, but not under the "Finance" menu, try
applying the same suggestion to *your* "One Step Update". If not, the
suggestion is moot.

I had this problem after formatting my disk. I rang their customer services
(UK)
and they gave me a new registration number.

Malcom,  you can purchase Quicken 2002 from Ebay for $9.95  (Buy It Now).  Would be easier than to mess around with
such an old version since you probably hadn't used it before (otherwise you would have a backup copy on a disk to incorporate
into your updated HD and OS).

This just worked fine for me (moving quicken.ini to the new machine).

Malcolm (or anyone else who has run into this particular bit of Intuit
nastiness), if you want my quicken.ini, email me and I'll send it to you.
Remove "nospam" from the address.

Here is a solution to the problem of quicken 98 basic registration. If you wrote down your original serial and customer number this will work.First open the quickenp98basic.ini file. Change the serial number back to the original number. Save and close. Open Quicken98basic open reistraion (it should show the original serial number) enter your original customer number.
good luck

I have a Quicken 98 Deluxe release 7 which I believe was issued in January 1998. In the past I have loaded all the transactions manually because I never had any internet access. Now at the library I am able to access the internet using my Firefox browser. Even though I am on the internet at the time Quicken is unable to identify the browser or the fact that I am on the internet when I try to to create a Quicken.com account to import either Bank transactions or security prices. I am wondering if the reason the software will not search for browsers is because Quicken 98 wasn't registered.

Here it is late in 2021 and I'm still using Quicken 98. Best program made. Use it on an off line machine and the machine lasts forever. Still running XP machines...just keep them off line.

Thanks to all of you for everything you posted all those years ago.........
