Couldn't print a report, and had the subject problem (getting weird
errors whenever I tried it). Found the following workaround for what has
to be a bug:

http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/printing/printer-setup-window-wont-not-open/GEN81998.html

There was no wpr.dat file anywhere on my machine, but there was a
wpr.ini file in the referenced folder. I renamed it, got the setup
window, selected my network printer, and was able to print the report.

Checked afterward, and there were no new wpr.* files anywhere on my
machine. I consider myself rather lucky, given the well-hidden and
inaccurate support article. However, I think it might take a newbie
literally weeks and weeks to get an answer.

Hi, Cal.

You didn't tell us which Windows version you are running. In my Windows 7
Ultimate x64, there are NO wpr*.* entries in my E:\QuickenW folder tree, but
I find these 3 wpr*.* entries on Drive C::

<paste>
Directory of c:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Config

08/19/2008 08:45 AM 3,618 wpr.ini
1 File(s) 3,618 bytes

Directory of c:\Users\All Users\Intuit\Quicken\Config

08/19/2008 08:45 AM 3,618 wpr.ini
1 File(s) 3,618 bytes

Directory of c:\Users\RC\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\Quicken\Config

10/24/2011 12:56 PM 9,298 WPR.DAT
1 File(s) 9,298 bytes

Total Files Listed:
3 File(s) 16,534 bytes
</paste>

I seldom print from Quicken, so I'm not sure whether my entries are typical
or not. Those 2008 entries may have been left over from some prior year's
installation. In case it matters, my printer is an HP 8500A
printer/scanner/copier, bought in January 2011, connecting wirelessly.

I'm pretty sure there is always a wpr.dat file (unless you have just deleted
it) ... though I don't think it's where that faq says it is.

On my 64 bit Windows 7 machine, my wpr.dat file is in the folder:

C:\users\MyWindowsUserName\Application Data\Intuit\Quicken\Config

Access to the C:\users ... folders is restricted. If you don't take the
right steps, you won't be able to even see the files in those folders ...
much less do anything with them.

Renaming (or deleting) wpr.dat has often "fixed" printing problems.

I had never heard of renaming wpr.ini before, though I knew the file
existed.

My wpr.ini file is in the folder:

C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Config

It looks to me like the person who wrote the faq, go the XP location for
WPR.DAT correct, then just used the wrong path for the Win 7 WPR.DAT.
The two locations are comparable, as C:\users is sort of the Win 7
replacement for C:\Documents and Settings.

Thanks, John and R.C. - On Vista, I just manually found a new wpr.dat in:

C:\Users\MyWindowsUserName\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\Quicken\Config

Then, using the Vista Advanced Search for everywhere and everything, the
file showed up. (Thought I'd done that before, but perhaps I screwed up.)

Regardless of the documentation problems and the existence of a
workaround, my main point in posting was to identify a bug, which really
ought to be addressed by Intuit.

FWIW, the bug probably has to do with the fact that this machine used to
be directly connected to MyPrinterName. My current Windows setup is to
MyPrinterName on NetworkedComputerName. The weird error messages
mentioned a problem with connecting to MyPrinterName, suggesting a bad
logic in the Quicken name test.

Corrupted WPR.DAT files have been around for many, many Quicken versions ...
as has the FAQ with the "fix".

I'm not convinced a Quicken bug is a necessary, or sufficient, cause of the
problem.

In any event, with a fix as simple as this one, it doesn't seem likely that
Intuit will rush to devote many resources to trying to correct the problem,
assuming they can correct it at all.

Symptom
Quicken 2002 (deluxe Installs on WIndows Home Premium x64, HP OEM). Started to fail to print (reports graphs etc), and failed to display dialog to select / configure printer.

Published Solution

Replace the WPR.Dat / Wpr.ini file in C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Config

http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/printing/not-able-to-print-from-quicken/GEN82237.html

http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/printing/printer-setup-window-wont-open/GEN81998.html

My solution

I had no C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Config.

This worked though...
1. Stopped Quicken
2. Renamed / removed WPR.Dat in C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QUICKENW.
3. Restarted Quicken
