I'm considering having several quicken programs modify one quicken
account. Has anyone tried this with a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
I have a home LAN and want to dial into the internet with my Labtop
which will connect to my LAN via a VPN router (A Linksys BEFVP41). I
wonder if the slow speed will interfere with the transactions. Anyone
try anything similiar?

Before you try the VPN configuration, have you confirmed that such a
configuration works on the LAN? What happens when 2 people try to access the
Quicken file with their respective Quicken programs? If their is file
locking and only 1 Quicken session can access it at a time and this is
enforced, then the only limitation to your VPN configuration is the
bandwidth issue. Since you would have proven that the configuration is safe,
why don't you just try it out?

According to the Quickbooks User's Manual (chapter 9 of 2002 Fin. SW.
for small Business) it is possible. The file will enter into
"multi-user" mode which allows multiple people to use the same file.
In this mode the users are prevented from doing certain things. There
is a full list of things that cannot be done in this mode listed in
the manual. I don't have all of the equipment available to me now.

I'm designing a small network for a small office and am trying to get
the cheapest possible set of equipment and I don't want to waste any
money/time on a VPN if it doesn't work. In my experience, with things
like this, the bandwidth limitation really causes some unexpected
problems. I think I'll go with a VPN anyway...the VPN has many other
uses as well. Thanks!

the problem is the quickbooks file can be quite huge (the 'shop' one is
about 120meg! for us) so you try running a search over a modem and it will
starting looking through the file!!!

I wouldn't run this over a modem, in file sharing.

I would run this in a terminal server and connect to the TS server via
dialup (its very usable!) and you will have no speed issues.

Win2k AS has this built in for free, you can use a 2 user terminal server
for free. its meant for remote admin, but you are not breaking there licence
by running it!

The other way would be a pc anywhere setup, but I think the TS is a bit
faster. as you don't tie up a machine waiting for you to dial in.

The original poster is looking to share *Quicken* files, not QuickBooks
files. At least that is how he worded his post...

The version that I have does support sharing the data file. It's
Quickbooks 2002 for small biz Premium. I don't know if this feature
is available for all version. Each person is given an
account/password and a permission table is set up when in the admin
mode. Certain functions cannot be carried out while in this mode, but
most are allowed. The GUI will update itself when the file has been
modified, in "real-time". According to the manual this can be done by
simply sharing the data file on a file server.( I will probably do
this by using one of the packaged Ethernet Network Drives that uses an
redundant disk array via Raid).

The problem is: two people are trying to update account information
from different computers. This is a small business application. The
owner has a LAN (via cable modem) and the remote location only has a
dial-up. What would be the easiest way to keep the account
syncranized? Any ideas? How well does the import/export feature
work. I cannot have two divergent files. Also, with the
export/import method, the computers must be nearby OR a person must be
at each computer. I would really like it all working together with
only one person required to update the account information. Thanks
for the help so far!!!

[Sigh] With all due respect, kind sir, you indicated in your original
post that you were referring to Quicken, not QuickBooks. There is a big
difference between the two software products. Since this is a Quicken
newsgroup, I had no reason to question the software to which you were
originally referring, even after seeing others mention QuickBooks. After
all, posts that ask about Quicken's network abilities do appear here
routinely.

However, now that you have indicated that you are using QuickBooks, you
would probably be better served by posting your question to the
QuickBooks-dedicated newsgroup. It is:

alt.comp.software.financial.quickbooks

You will most likely receive more answers there, since technically 100%
of that newsgroup's participants are using QuickBooks, unlike here, where
most of us use some flavor of Quicken.

If your ISP does not carry this newsgroup, send your ISP an email
requesting it and they should have no trouble adding it. Alternatively,
you can use Google's newsgroup archive search to search for possible
answers to your question.

Copy the above newsgroup name, then paste it into the newsgroup field on
the following web-based form. Type in a few keywords, like VPN, then
click Search to produce the results:

Good luck,

With a resting heart rate of 58 and a BP of 108/72, I would say that I am
pretty relaxed. However, thanks for your concerns. :-)
