My old computer burned out (motherboard malfunction). I have just installed
a new computer, and want to read my most recent Quicken data files (which
unfortunately had not been backed up when the computer crashed) which I can
access by hooking up the old hard drive to the new computer. Unfortunately,
while the files are definitely there, Quicken "Open" does not see them.
According to the help file, they have to be backup files. Of course, I
cannot back them up now

How can I go about simply reading in the data files recorded by my old
computer? I cannot understand why there is a problem.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi, J.

What are the extensions on your Quicken data files? Are they .qdf, ..qsd,
etc.? If so, then you should be able to get Quicken to open the whole set
by browsing to the .qdf file and opening that.

If they are backup files, then you should be able to open them from Quicken
by clicking File | Restore backup file, and then navigate to the drive and
folder that holds them.

If this doesn't get you going, please post more information, such as your
Quicken version, Windows version, and the extension(s) of your Quicken data
files. If your backup files were created by an earlier version of Quicken,
you may need to Restore them from the same version.

You are right - thanks ; it was a version problem. I reinstalled an earlier
version and it works.

Thanks again

I have a somewhat similar problem as J. Alcock. Almost 2 years ago I
retired an old Power Mac 7500/100 (and it's still ticking very well).
In its hard drive was Quicken backup data from 1997 thru 2001, last
updated in Quicken Deluxe 7 for the Mac, in Nov. 2001.

My new computer is an iMac. It has no floppy disc drive and I want to
import my old data to the new computer running preinstalled Quicken
2002 Deluxe. While I can (and have) write the data to a floppy disc, I
can't put the floppy into the iMac. So I have enlisted my PC laptop,a
Toshiba Portege 7020CT on which I am running Windows XP Professional.
It has a floppy drive and I have copied the Mac-created floppy file to
the Documents folder in the Toshiba. I have not run into any "format"
problems with respect to the floppy disc in either computer.

I networked the Toshiba with the iMac via cross-over Cat5e cable and
have moved the "shared" file to my iMac. But now I cannot get Quicken
2002 to open this file. The iMac does not allow me to select Quicken
2002 as an option application for opening the data file. I am willing
to set all the data into a new, separate account which I have created
in Quicken 2002 but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to
import it. My goal is to be able to merge the old data with that which
has been created in Quicken 2002 to produce reports and statistics
spanning the entire period 1997 - present.

Anyone have ideas? Thanks.

Did you try Opening the File via Quicken? File > Open?

Also - why didn't you just email yourself the file from the old Mac to the new
iMac?

Yes, I have tried opening the file both ways: from Quicken to open it
while sitting on my desktop, but the file is not highlighted to be
selected; and from within Quicken after dropping the file on the
application. Neither works.

I avoided the email solution because the old Mac is not connected to
the Internet and the file size over a slow connection was something I
tried to avoid using the floppy method. But it seems to me I would
wind up with the same file I have now, regardless of how it was
transferred, and would still be faced with the current Quicken
application not opening it.

I appreciate your thoughts, atd1999. Any other ideas?
