When I back up Quicken 2000 to a separate directory on a hard/zip
drive, it shows 8 files about 3.1 MB.

When I peruse C:\...Quicken\Backup, I see 31 files taking up 15.2 MB.
I have 6 Qdata1 files, 6 Qdata2 files... and 7 Qdata5 files. Would it
be safe to delete all the Qdata1-Qdata4 files?

I understand that the Qdata.qdf is the main file (largest), does anyone
know if it's safe to delete any of these: .abd, .npc, .qel, .qsd, or
.qtx?

Thanks,

Bud

First the is no such thing as a Quicken "data file". ALWAY think DATA
SET.

Anything that you do should be done on ALL of the file in the dataset
(<filename>.*)

I don't know the order of the automatic backups, but you can delete
all of them, or all of them except the latest one. Depends on how
secure you are in the number and alternate locations that you have for
backups.

Thanks Bill, I think I'll delete some and see if it does any damage.

The ones ending on 1 are the newest, 2, second newest, etc...

ummm... Not exactly. The higher numbere ones are the newest ONLY
until the maximum number of backups is reached, then they begin
cycling from 1 again. Ath this point, 1 is the newest.

It's best to use Windows Explorer (or equivalent) and look at the
dates on the files.

Respectfully,

Kenton Smith

No, Bill Pierson's answer is right. Before Quicken automatically backs up the latest file by copying over the oldest version, it RENAMES each of the old copies to the next higher number. When DATA1 becomes DATA2, that leaves the name DATA1 available for today's backup. Therefore, the newest version is always DATA1. (See the Quicken Help file, topic: Changing the frequency of automatic backups or turning them off.)

Confirm this scheme by looking at the dates of your own backup files. (In your \BACKUP directory)
