I have recently upgraded from Quicken 4 to Quicken 2000 De Luxe (UK
edition).

Does anyone else experience the same problem as I am experiencing.

I am VAT registered using the Cash accounting scheme. (VAT is similar to
sales tax but I don't know whether it is accounted for in the same way).

I enter my invoices in the Receivables account. When they are paid the
money is credited to my Business current account.

I did a VAT detail report for the current quarter using the
Report/Business/VAT Detail option. This gave me a loud of gobbledegook
in terms of transfers at the end of the report which were confusing and
irrelevant, it also didn't tally with the VAT control account or provide
totals of outputs minus inputs.

In Quicken 4 I had always sub-grouped by category and deselected
categories I didn't wish to be taken into account for VAT purposes.

In Quicken 2000 when I sub-grouped by category (or class) the programme
lost the VAT codes in the VAT Column and did not put any amount in the
VAT Amount Column and did not add the VAT on to Gross column for any
outputs (income). VAT on inputs (expenses) was accounted for OK>

I spoke to Intuit at length about it and sent them a test file which did
the same thing on my computer.

Simon Smith sent me a letter saying they couldn't find any problem with
the data file and suggesting that they are system relating and could be
related to another program running on the system or part of the system
i.e. the graphics card.

Given that the rest of the programme appears to function OK I think this
unlikely but would appreciate comments, is it because I am using cash
accounting?.

I upgraded because I was having problems with Quicken 4 crashing when I
changed the dates on customised reports. This may have been after I
installed Quicken 2000 to evaluate. Anyone any comments on this please?.

Does anyone know another accounts package that would allow me to mix
business and personal finances in one package and account for VAT under
cash accounting?. I have used Quicken for 5 years but can't carry on
using it if I can't solve these problems.

Thanks in anticipation

I am using Quicken 98 in the same circumstances as you. I do not have
any problems with VAT Control Account tallies with an Excel spreadsheet I
keep for cross-checking.

I have Quicken 2000 on order and will let you know how I get on when it
arrives.

Roger
