IIF file says it imported, but nothing there?

Hi All:

I just created an IIF file for ITEMS following the format of an exported
ITEMS file. Everything looks fine.

When I import it into QuickBooks, the program says "Your data has been
imported". But when I look at the list of ITEMS, the entries are not there.
(The HIDDEN field is set to N)

Any ideas on what's happening here?

TIA,
Grace

It means that you don't have the file formatted properly. I assume you set
it up in Excel. It has to be saved as a text file and the file name has to
be in quotes with the .IIF file extension on it such as a file name like:
"My Items.IIF" If you have the correct headings and have used the !INVITEM
heading to start the list, then this is probably the problem.

Your file is not formatted properly. QB can read the file and does not find
errors or data it can read.

BTW. The file does not need the .iif extension but it must be a
comma-separated-value (CSV) text file. Use "Save As" from Excel to create
the file.

Thanks, Ed:

I'll double check that I'm saving it properly.

I agree with the previous response that the problem is most likely the
headers -- it is very tricky.

I would suggest that you create one item manually in QB; export the
inventory list; import it to Excel or whatever; then add items to the
list to be exported/imported into QB.

I found the problem. You were right -- it was the header. Actually, I did
a fill down from the header and that included the "!" -- which I didn't need
infront of each item name. Now the imports work like a dream.

Thanks for all your help.

Did your "quantity on hand" and "current price" fields fill
in properly? I've been trying, with no success, to import an
inventory file of approx. 6500 items into the Items list and
every field except these two load fine.

I met with a 'Certified Quickbooks Advisor' today and
he told me this is the way the item list imports and if I can
find out how to get these fields to load to show him!

You need to use an ITEMADJ iif to enter quantity and prices. A sample is
listed below.

!TRNS TRNSTYPE DATE ACCNT AMOUNT
!SPL TRNSTYPE DATE ACCNT AMOUNT QNTY INVITEM VALADJ
TRNS ITEMADJ 12/15/99 OPENING BAL EQUITY -175
SPL ITEMADJ 12/15/99 INVENTORY ASSET 175 100 Cabinets:Cabinet Pulls Y
ENDTRNS

Thanks for the help Karl. I tried the ITEMADJ iif and it got the
quantity on hand numbers to load, but I still can't get the current
price to work. Is there something I missed?

Also, do I have to enter each item with a teamed TRS/SPL entry
or can I list all the TRS lines, then the SPL lines?

Thanks again for the help.
