I saw a software package in Computer City, complete with 3000 sheets
of blank check stock, claiming that you can print checks on an
ordinary laser printer that willbe acceped at any major bank.

It said it is ready to rock, with Quickbooks or Peachtree.

Why does anybody pay $60-$100 for professional check printing any
more? Is this product for real?

Somebody even posted a few months ago, a set of micr fonts that
make it possible to print checks natively from Peachtree.... sheesh.
it seems dumb, asking clients to pay for laser check printing....

That's the very product that motivated me to figure out how to do it
natively from Peachtree. When you've got five separate checking
accounts at the same bank (business, personal, attorney trust account,
plus two separate trusts), buying custom checks for each gets
expensive. That said, you have to verify that your bank is using
optical scanners and not magnetic ones. It's kind of weird; some
months everything comes back in the bank statements slick as a
whistle; other months the checks all have a MICR label taped on the
bottom. I think pinpoint accuracy on positioning is the key to make it
work right. Fortunately, the check stock I get has a target for the
left MICR symbol. Speaking as a lawyer, my checks are every bit as
legitimate as those printed by a third party. If my bank ever
complains, I may have to invest in a MICR toner cartridge for my
printer; but I haven't had to do that yet.

That would be me. Let me know if you want me to send it over to you,
via e-mail.

Sure has made my practice a bit easier. And a lot more secure.

Hi MIKE! I forgot where I got those fonts from, Thanks!

Couldn't remember the name of the vendor either, when I posted that.
I think the vendor was VersaCheck,

Yahoo has an awesome software search. HOLY SHIT
look at all these vendors;

Having the program on your computer subjects your bank balance to
misappropriation (checks are not protected in locked storage.) Someone
else could print checks while you're away. MICR toner costs more than
ordinary toner. Unless you are the only person using the laser printer,
someone else might use up your expensive MICR toner. It's inconvenient to
be changing toner cartridges whenever checks need printing then changing
back.

They certainly could be. And since they're blank, they do not identify
the account. And Peachtree Accounting is password-protected, even *if*
someone were savvy enough to figure out how to print checks from it
onto the blank stock (a big "if"). It's *more* secure to have blanks
around, because if someone steals them, even from locked storage, they
cannot do anything with them.

Not without my password.

That's true, but I don't use MICR toner. Most banks today are equipped
with optical scanners, rather than magnetic ones (information from
that VersaCheck outfit, confirmed by my bank, Bank One). As I said, I
may have to get a MICR cartridge in the future, which will indeed be a
pain: but I haven't had to yet.

I for one, would certainly like to have these fonts and a brief explanation
of how to do this from within Peachtree.

Thanks in advance for whatever information you might have on this.

Can anyone recommend a good stand-alone program for printing custom checks?

I'd like to be able to take checks-by-fax, so need to be able to print drafts.
I've tried out some of the demo's available on-line, such as from
checksbyfax.com

The interface is rather confusing and the MICR fonts worked one day and then
the next day the fonts reverted back to courier.

I'm considering Versacheck Pro and would like opinions on this software for
my needs (printing drafts, as well as printing my own checks), as well as
advice on any other software that I may want to consider.

If you could *please* also send your reply to me at na...@bellsouth.net, as I
don't want to miss your posting, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Seeing as how you're posting this on the Peachtree user board, why do
you need a stand-alone program to print checks? Peachtree Accounting
does it just fine by itself, MICR coding and all. E-mail me back if
you want me to send you the font and a Peachtree form with
instructions.
