Dear All,

I just downloaded the latest nVIDIA's detonator (.0353) and to my
surprise the V-Sync OFF/ON still does not function (it is always OFF,
resulting in "tearing" effect)
I have a Hercules TNT2 Ultra and I never seen nVIDIA to do anything
about this issue...

Can anyone confirm, add comments?

Best regards,
Shawn Tooryani

Hi,
i've got the same... some games are flickering around (eg. Revolt) with my
Viper 550.
IMHO you have to go back to tho 'old' drivers!

I get the tearing with the 2.08 drivers as well only in q3 tho?
Wonder why.

it nice to see iwan't the only one with tearing and what i guessed was
v-sync i have a the stb velocity 4400 and i had no problem with the quake 3
test i had and the 2.08 drivers but in 2 games i have gta2 and thief i get
tearing textures and i don't want to use the 2.08 drivers. they were both
direct-x games and the option for v-sync is in open-gl so i know why it
didn't work for me but why don't they let you enable it for direct-x
is starting to piss me off

From the help on the 2.63 detonators

Select this option to disable vertical sync.
Also known as "disabling VSYNC", this allows an image to be immediately
rendered to
the screen without waiting to be synchronized to the vertical retrace of the
monitor. This allows
for frame rates higher than the refresh rate of your monitor, but may
produce visual artifacts and
tearing resulting in reduced image quality.

Possible help, up your refresh rate, should be able to set 100Mhz, maybe.

Translation, Vsync does not check the monitor refresh scan to ensure it is a
good time to
update the screen image resulting in strage effects such as tearing, either
enable it or try
to work around it by altering your refresh rate.

For more help on other features, try right clicking your mouse over ther
named text.

Try the Nvidia 3.62 drivers, they are much better. In case you need the
CoolBits reg file I have attached it.

I don't remember having this problem when I tried the 3.53's. However, if
vsynch is truly disabled (I thought it was enabled by default), then why
don't you guys add the "coolbits" tweak, and then just enable vsynch in D3D.

If you are running Win98, try the 3.62 drivers...they fixed the
flickering.

weird.. my problem is the opposite.. it's always ON for me and going to
vsync OFF [using coolbits] doesn't result in faster fps.. at least I don't
get the tearing I guess..

The only way you could get more fps by disabling vsync would be like this:

Say that you have your moniter's refresh rate set to 75hz. If you have
vsync enabled your framerate could not go above 75. The only way you could
get more fps is if your framerate was going higher then that and having
vsync enabled was holding your fps back.

I run quake3 with the default com_maxfps 85 and I have my moniter set to
85hz and I leave vysnc enabled. No tearing.

try it in WarBirds and you'll see what I mean... fps goes from 23 to 38 on
in-game benchmarks and backed up by real world testing also.. that's using
the Diamond 4.02's and a P3/500 256mb PC100 ram, using ANY Dets it goes from
23 to *yawn* 24 fps [which could be test variance anyway]

Click where it says

Driver information for AMD Athlon(TM) users

It says for Athlon users only but they work fine on my Celeron.

They work just fine on my TNT1. They should work great on your TNT2u.

Yes, they work on TNT and TNT2 chips too.

The 3.62 drivers are the 3.53 drivers with one additional feature. They will
put an
Athalon and GeForce combination into 1X AGP mode, any other combination
of CPU/Nvidia video card will work as is, and yes they support other CPU's
and
the TNT/TNT2 chipset. I run them on my PII 450 with a V770U just fine.

Hey guys, try these two things out. The forcemultitexture reg hack boosted
my q2 rates quite a bit. Just remember to back up you registry first, AND BE
CAREFUL. Mistakes editing your registry can cause windows to stop operating
correctly.

1)Force MultiTexture:
Try enabling Multitexture by adding the DWORD ForceMultiTexture= "1" under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\RivaTNT\OpenGL

2)Vsync:
With Nvidia drivers 2.08 and CL drivers 2.04, the single registry key:
DefaultSwapInterval is used... It is a DWORD.
When it is set as ffffffff (eight f's), it disables OpenGL Vsync; setting
it at 1 enables it.

Regards,
Mike

Cheers for the help people, although UT still "stutters" when turning quick, any
ideas ?
I've already set mouse smoothing and direct input on.

How much video memory do you have? going from 23-38fps tell me
you have very little video memory, or the test do not use tripple bufering.

In quake3 I see maybe ~1fps diference betwen sync & unsynced...
I will take that 1fps hit, and not see the ugly & disturbing screen tearing.
Breaking a thing dont make them better... Vsyn off is only for benchmarking
the code GFX engine.

32mb V770.... it's an ingame test.... everyone that does the test gets
similar results also.. a BIG diff between vsync and novsync.. maybe it's
because the game engine is fairly old...

Tearing is a common problem of detonator drivers. And it is sometimes irrelevant
of Vsync. The latest ones, 3.62, have a better remedy..
