work as well as the others i was telling you about except there is a
cracking interface in the display properties box...any problems arise and
i`ll let you all know...makes me think all the problems with the card are
cured when installing on a clean system

I tried the Hercules drives just to see if the tools work, and yes they do.
So long STB Vision98 s/w and all the crashing it caused. Now i have some
drivers for my STB 4400 AGP will hopefully still get updates with the latest
reference drivers and added functions of WORKING TV-Out / utilities &
overclocking tweaker.

Just hope 3dFX don't decide to buy Hercules now....

Best Regards,
Paul

Yes, I had the v1.42 drivers upgraded from the CD drivers, then upgraded to
the 1.52 drivers from Quantex's site then updated them to the official v1.52
from STB's site, also tried the Nvidia ref drivers, but Vision98 v3.01j
still caused crashes. Uninstalled vision software and updated to the
Hercules drivers.- no problems at all!

Just curious how the Hercules drivers compare to STB v1.52..... performance
/ stability / etc....... thanks.

Yeah Vision totally crashes my system also, I'm still running the CD drivers
on my PCI 4400. I just haven't gotten brave enough to try the newer drivers
(already downloaded). That Vision program caused me alot of work.

Using the Hercules Benchmark utility, the Herc drivers came in around 300,
the STB 1.51 at 500ish, visibly much quicker. If you uninstall Vision 98 and
reassign the card to the STB drivers after installing the Hercules package
you will lose the overclocking function as well as Herc's Direct3D and
openGL tweakers, but will retain STB's version of the two. At any rate,
what's left is much better than that Vision 98 junk plus you get a built in
audio, video, CD player for approximately the same file size.

Ok. I've tried everything I can think of and everything I've read off this
newsgroup and I *still* can't get my STB Velocity 4400 to work.
I've tried all the STB drivers and all the nVidia drivers and none of
them work.
What happens is if I try to go out of 16 color VGA mode, when re-boot up,
it boots until it starts loading the video driver. Then you can hear my
monitor click to re-set the resolution, then nothing. blank screen.
I've tried everything I could think of. I used my computer on a different
monitor. Same thing. I used the card in a different computer. same thing.
I used a *new* card on my computer. Same thing.
Called STB. they couldn't figure it out.
Called my friend who is a programmer at nVidia. couldn't figure it out.

Can anybody help me please! $150 to see 16 colors is a bit pricey, don't
you think?
Here's the specs on my system:

Asus P2B motherboard
Pentium II 450
SB Live
128 MB RAM
Viewsonic PS790 Monitor

Thanks!

Hi Zenonas Zenonos,

There are several things to check in regard to this:Install and enable
the latest USB Update for your system.

In the CMOS setup for the motherboard BIOS, enable "Assign IRQ to VGA"
and ,disable Video Shadow, Video Cache, Decouple (or Hidden) Refresh,
Byte merge, and Palette Snoop.

Check the Windows Device Manager Computer Properties View Resources
Interrupt Request list to see if the video adapter is sharing an IRQ
with another device. Windows may not see this as an actual conflict, but
the nVidia RIVA chipset on the STB VELOCITY 4400 must not share an IRQ
with another device. "IRQ holder for PCI steering" is not considered
another device.

Obtain a new VGARTD.VXD file from the motherboard manufacturer and
overwrite the existing file in the Windows\System subfolder.

Make sure you have loaded the latest copy of DirectX 6 from the STB
VELOCITY CD prior to installing the STB display drivers.

Check the resources of the VELOCITY 4400 in Device Manager to ensure it
has an interrupt assigned to it. If no IRQ is assigned: On the Device
Manager page of the Display Properties dialog box, highlight "Computer"
and select "Properties." Make sure that the Interrupt Request (IRQ)
option is selected and then scroll down the list to see if you have an
IRQ free for the VELOCITY 4400 to use (there will be a gap in the
listings). If you do not have a free IRQ, the VELOCITY 4400 may not be
able to run in your system and you will have to remove a peripheral
device using an IRQ in order to run the VELOCITY 4400. If you do have a
free IRQ but the VELOCITY 4400 is not being assigned one, your
motherboard is set up to ignore interrupt requests from graphics
adapters. You will need to enable IRQ assignment to VGA adapters in your
system CMOS (contact your motherboard vendor if you are unfamiliar with
the system CMOS setup). If an IRQ is assigned: On the Device Manager
page of the Display Properties dialog box, highlight "Computer" and
click on "Properties." Make sure that the Interrupt Request (IRQ) option
is selected and then scroll down the list to see if the VELOCITY 4400 is
sharing an IRQ assignment with another device (IRQ Steering does not
count as a device). If it is, you will need to manually change the IRQ
assignment in your system CMOS to an IRQ that is not in use by any other
devices. If there are no free interrupts, see above. If you are running
the VELOCITY 4400 on a non-Intel system, it is being assigned an IRQ and
it is not sharing with any other devices. If you are still only able to
use 16 colors, you will need to get the latest system updates for your
particular system from the system vendor (specifically BIOS updates, AGP
drivers and any bus mastering updates available).

The CMOS setting you want to enable is "Assign IRQ to VGA". Disable
Video BIOS Shadow, Video BIOS Cache, Decouple (or Hidden) Refresh, Byte
merge, Turbo mode, Write Cache Pipeline and Palette Snoop. The AGP
aperture may be set at 256. Not all motherboards are capable of a 256
AGP aperture. If you have one of these systems you will want to leave
the AGP aperture set to 64.

Kind regards

After trying all the suggestions still can't make the card work.

By the way did you find in BIOS setup Video BIOS Shadow, Video BIOS Cache,
Decouple (or Hidden) Refresh, Byte merge, Turbo mode, Write Cache Pipeline
and Palette Snoop.

If you hear of anything let me know!

Yeah I tried that. Actually, I just put this system together (with friends)
last weekend. Got all the stuff at the Pomona show. At first we put
everything together and installed everything. When the video drivers didn't
work, we did everything over again and started from scratch (including
formatting hard drive again). We tried it with *only* the video card attached
(no sound, no modem). Still no go. :(

It's using IRQ 10 and the only thing that's sharing IRQ 10 is "IRQ Holder for
PCI Steering", which I understand is not a problem.

You're right, that shouldn't be a problem. If you've tried a
different monitor and a different Velocity 4400, it seems as if the
problem may be with the system itself.

anything, because I'm not. I'm just trying to give enough info so that I can
get help from you people to get my card working and I thank all of you who
have responded so far).

This card was also tried on a completely different system and it still did
the exact same thing. Not only that, on this other system, (actually the
system that was in the store that I bought the Velocity 4400 in the first
place) we tried the Diamond Viper 550 and guess what? Same thing!

Does it have something to do with the AGP slot? Is there some trick I need to
do to get the AGP slot going? (I'm not sure if I specified earlier that
this was the AGP card and not the PCI card).

thanks again,

Oh, you're not sounding belligerent at all! Believe me, I think we've
all seen belligerent on this NG and that isn't it. :-)

That IS peculiar.

It could have something to do with the AGP slot. I think it would be
best to e-mail me on this since it is so unusual. It's easier to
track that way. Give me a description (again, sorry) of your system
and the store system if possible and the basics on what we've been
through (so again, it's easier to track).
