FX 5900 fan not coming on

I have an AOpen GeForce FX 5900. When the computers powers up the fan
on the graphics card comes on for a few seconds and then goes off, I
assume this is a test to see if the fan is working. When I am doing
everyday stuff on the computer the GPU peaks at 44C. When I play
Half-Life it goes up to 80C but the fan doesn't come on? Is it waiting
for an even higher temp before it comes on or what? Any advice would
be greatly appreciated.

The 5900 use variable fan speed. When you first turn the PC on the fan spins
fast to disipate heat quickly, then slows to the 2d speed - but the fan is
always on. As soon as you launch any D3D or OpenGL app the fan speeds up -
or at least should do, and you can hear this. If your fan was not spinning,
your temp would go much higher than 80c in Half Life, believe me! I am
concerned though if you can't hear the fan spinning faster when you first
launch Half Life - are you using standard drivers and if so which versions?
Have you flashed you vid cards bios?

I have the newest drivers from the Nvidia site, and I've never flashed
the BIOS, maybe the fan is speeding up and I'm just not noticing it.
If I change the overclocking settings on the driver dialog and hit the
test button, I always hear the fan speed up as it tests the settings.

Should be OK then, but 80 seems kind of high - how do you measure it? I
leave the Nvidia temp tab on the screen, and after say 20 minutes of a game

method, but I guess it's down to the case cooling you're using...

I left Speedfan running while I played and then checked its graph
afterwards. I have ordered two case fans as just now I have one poor
one. I got 441/932 for autodetect.

I think now that there might be warm air building up underneath the
card, when I get a fan to blow air in from the front this will
probably sort it.

Your thermally controlled fan is defective. It should be running at least
slowly constantly.

I think now that it probably is running normally, I just can't hear it
for the CPU and PSU fans. I just played Day of Defeat with the sounds
off and when I fired my machine gun I could hear the fan accelerating
exactly in time with my fire!

Dunno about the Aopen, but my BFG 5600u fan comes on at power up, stays on
until I get into windows, shuts off until I launch any 3D app. After
I exit app, it stays on another 5-10 mins, and so on.
