You're a little confused:
1. Glide is not OpenGL. Glide is a propriatary API from 3dfx, OpenGL
originated at SGI.
2. The G400 does not officially support Glide, though you can try some
of the 'wrapper' programs out there (much like Matrox's OpenGL -> D3D
wrapper)
3. Most games support one of two standards, Direct3D or OpenGL. Glide
is fast becoming a non-factor.
If none of your games are Glide only (98 version of EA Sports, I-war,
F-15, many others) then you can ditch the Voodoo for the G400.

Wasn't there a command line switch you needed to reconfigure the display
driver for 3DS Max, -h or something. I haven't used Max for a while and 1.2
was the last version I used. Note things have probably changed since then.
I suggest asking in a 3D Studio newsgroup, or read your manual again.
A hdi file sounds like a Heidi driver, you won't be able to find a hardware
heidi driver for the G200. Actually the software heidi driver (z buffer)
would probably work better than a G200 in OpenGL. Worth a try though.
