In eternal optimism I installed these after reading the link First of One
provided about restored functionality for AGP card (Barton 3200, X1650 Pro
512Mb, XP Home SP2) and was immediately treated to the dreaded "Zero Display
Service Error" . Restoring to the Cat 7.5's made it functional again. I
think this X1650 Pro is going on eBay and a 7800GS is in my immediate
future.

So much for the hotfix. Looks like it breaks more things than it fixes...

You should notice a nice speed boost with the 7800GS.

Sounds like your system is very similar to mine - Barton 3200,
Sapphire X1950 Pro and 2GB DDR400 Dual Channel memory. I formatted
the hard drive c: this morning and did a clean install of Vista Home
Premium 32bit and after all the update installed the ATI 8.1 and had
the same problems as before. Then I read this newgroup and download
the ATI hotfix; after the install my Windows Experiencd Subscore went
from 1.0 to 5.9 for Graphics and from 1.0 to 5.8 for Gaming Graphics.
I also tested the directx device by playing hearts.

Over than that white spot in the upper left hand corner of the desktop
my system seems to be working again. Oops I just noticed you use
Windows XP, I use Vista Home Premium. Hope you get it working.

Do the Direct3D tests in DXDiag work properly for you too?

The white spot in the upper left hand corner reportedly goes away if you
disable the useless ATi icon in the system tray.

I ran DXDiag and did not see any problems. The white spot in the
corner is gone now that disabled the useless ATI icon in the tool
tray. Thanks.

BTW I just finished upgrading that system to Vista Home Premium SP1 RC
so unless you are running the same system you may not get the same
results.

Do you find it ironic to run a release-candidate version of a service pack?
