I would like to buy Dolby Digital speakers for my computer so
that I can hook it up to my DXR2 card (and SBLive) to get DD from
DVDs. I've looked at the Desktop Theatre 5.1 but it just doesn't seem
worth the money. In an advertisement from Dell I noticed they were
selling Dolby Digital speakers with their new computers. Apparently
you can buy them seperately too.

Check them out at:

http://gigabuys.us.dell.com/store/detail.asp?sku=313-0284

and the user's guide at:

http://support.dell.com/oti/ACC/ada880/Eng/Index.htm

They put out a total of 80Watts and they decode Pro Logic and
Dolby Digital. The only strange thing is that they leave out the
center speaker so I guess they must downmix the sound.

Has anyone heard these speakers? They are made by Altec
Lansing so I assume that they would be close to the same sound quality
as the 48's.

Thanks,
Aaron

Just understand the Altecs are only TWO(2) speakers + sub (left, right,
sub). The FOUR they start is that each of the Left & Right have TWO(2)
attached speakers (top swivels). They are like the ADA390(s) in that they
virtualize the dolby.....the Desktops are better (IMHO). You can also get
the 5.1s for $199.00 yet (I think)...Creative was having a special deal a
week or two back, I believe its still on. (Check Audio Immersion for the url
to the page with the special pricing, or better yet if you know anyone that
works for a "Creative partner" - they're $149.00!)

Thanks for the reply but I don't think that the Altecs are just TWO speakers +
the sub. Look carefully, the tops detach. According to Altec's page, you can
set them up as 4 speakers + the sub or you can stick the two rear speakers on
top of the front ones to get a 2+sub combination. I wouldn't be looking at
them if they did virtual Dolby... I'm fairly sure that these are comparable to
the Desktop Theatre except without the center speaker.

No, because those two attached speakers come off and can be placed
behind you, and they serve as your left and right prologic surround
channels.

Same like the ACS495's if you want to make comparisons.
The 495's are available from Dell Factory Outlet for $99.

The 5.1 with those tiny, tinny satellites, no thanks. For $199 you
could get 2 sets of ACS48's or ACS295's to use with your 4-speaker
output sound card (Live or MX300).

Hey folks,

I've been looking t the Altec 880's aswell. I like the look of them but I
would prefer 5.1 Dolby Digital speakers. Like the Creative Desktop Theatre.
Yes they look naff, i know that for a start, but to be honest they're the
only proper 5.1 Dolby Digital ones I can find..... Unless you know somthing
I don't.

So, anyone know of any decent 5.1 DD speakers?

thanks

Winston.

I'd rather just build an extra machine w/DVD and hook it up to my Home
Theatre. I play games on my computer.

What a fucking moron.

If you do what you say - buy 2 sets of ACS48's.... you can't play DVD movies
well at all. You will have totally shitty sound. For the same price you can
get a Dolby Digital 5.1 receiver, and be in pure heaven.

I guess if you dont' want any DVD movies, your way is ok. (but then you
would suck).

Mike,

Soz about wot I said. Anyway, I hear you got the Desktop Theatre 5.1, are
they really that good? I've got a SB Live! and i'm getting the Videologic
DVD Player(MPEG Decoder). will the DT 5.1 work with with them? I want some
class DD speakers and these are the ones i'm currently looking at.

Thanks,

IMHO, they are that good.

I dont think DTS works with them, since it is a DD5.1 receiver, not a DTS
one.

not sure though
