Actually Utopia Live! is by far the best and by far beats all other
'free' GM compatible soundfonts available on the net in terms of
balance, 'ambience/depth' and originallity of the sounds.. I can say
this because I made it and because everybody that has tried it says
the same. The only catch is that it's not for free but what do you
expect from such an amount of work. Just check out our WWW site at
http://utopia.a1.nl for some MP3 samples.
If there is anybody out there who wishes to do a serious review of
Utopia Live! AND has an influential WWW site or works for a music
related magazine contact me and I'll arrange a copy for you.
If however you want to stick to 'free' soundfonts I'd suggest either
the 8 MB EMU bank or the Chaos 12 MB bank.... both purely seen from
the point of balance since that is what most soundfonts lack terribly.
Another issue is that the 'big' soundfonts usually have a few big
instruments while the others are simply the same crappy sounds which
everybody has been using for the last many years..

The 64 MB soundfont which you mean is far too big for the sound it
produces and won a competition because the biggest soundfont would
win. If anyone would have entered a 128 MB soundfont it would have
won. Don't think that bigger is better since this is especially with
soundfonts often not the case. There are actually only a few good GM
compatible soundfonts out there and these are usually the smaller
ones. For a really good GM soundfont replacement you'll have to look
for a commercial bank (I'm not naming any particular soundfonts here
;-)), no matter what others say. Appart from a few exceptions (like
the 12 MB Chaos bank to my knowledge.. I could even be wrong here
though) all the GM soundfonts on the net are illegal since they all
use parts of EMU's soundfonts and other commercial sources. The rest
of the instruments is often pasted together by using Public Domain
samples which are re-used again and again by nearly all the soundfonts
with only a few changes applied.. The result is an unbalanced, all but
rich sounding, often badly programmed (bad loops, clicks, badly tuned,
etc.) soundfont which is quite big because it like the 64 MB bank has
many many percussion kits (imported from all the other soundfonts out
there) and thus is supposed to be the best.. Don't make me laugh..
Making a full GM compatible soundfont from the scratch the right way
will take one experienced person about 1 year at least 2-3 hours a
day.

and while you're at it also check http://listen.to/hammersound
...yes I know them both and I've checked all the GM compatible
soundbanks and none even 'touches' Utopia Live! 'as a whole' (perhaps
with some instruments but as a whole NEVER). Regarding the 63 MB
soundfont, it won because it was the biggest one not because it was
good. I've send a copy of Utopia Live! to the owners of hammersound
(which send back some feedback which is now on our WWW site) and to
the owner of 'thesoundsite' of which I haven't received a
'review/feedback' yet.
Just listen to the MIDIs on our WWW site and you'll instantly notice
that Utopia Live! sound much more richer and has MUCH more 'depth'
than any other soundfont you've heard before. Apart from that it's
legal and 'dead-cheap'. If you have any good MIDI files you want to
hear with Utopia Live! (designed for the SoundCanvas of course) just
email them to me and I might put them online as an MP3 (depending on
copyrights etc.) or email them to you. I'm more than happy to prove
that Utopia Live! is way out in front if that's neccesary to get the
product better known.
