Hi,

I have PowerDVD XP4.0 (trial version) and an Audigy board.

When I watch a movie, I get annoying short clicks in the sound. It happens
about every two seconds, but it's irregular. Mostly happens when the current
dialogue's sound level is soft (low).

I think it's an issue between PDVD4 and Audigy, because I get no such
problems with WinAMP (directsound or mci) or any Directsound-based game.

My machine is a dual-cpu monster so I guess horsepower is not the issue here
:-)

Also, I tried changing PCI latencies in every possible way (in the BIOS),
and the problem doesn't vanish.

Of course, my Audigy is alone on it's IRQ.

Thanks in advance for any help.

J.B

Forgot to say, the involved OS is winXP.

Thanks

Have you tried the different audio modes that are available in PDVD 4? Does
the clicking occur despite what mode your using (different speaker modes,
and the different 2-speaker modes) or does it only occur in one certain
setting?

Hi,
I appreciate your help.

I have done the suitable tests:

6-speaker => CLICKS
4-speaker => CLICKS
2-speaker, Stereo => SOUNDS GOOD
2-speaker, A3D/DirectSound3D => CLICKS

Also, all modes (except 2-speaker stereo) exhibit clicks when keeping mouse
button pressed and just seeking like crazy.

In 2-speaker stereo, no problem whatsoever !
I guess that's because it's the only mode which doesn't use Directsound ?
This mode looks like WaveOut.. which works great (confirmed by hours of
winamp playback).

Do you know of any directsound or powerdvd registry setting (such as
latency, buffer size, etc) that I could try ?

Obviously the problem seems purely software (related to Audigy's xp drivers
probably)...

I'd appreciate your comments on this..

Best Regards,
J.B

Yeah, your propably right about DirectSound-issue. Having look at the
registry (and the files in the PowerDVD folder) it seems that PowerDVD uses
its own AudioCodecs, instead of the generic WinXP codecs. This is propably
because playing DVDs, and getting the full potential of them, requires more
advanced features than 'regular' audio-playback (just look at the logos at
the bottom-left of the PowerDVD startup screen, and you'll get the idea).
There might be a some incompatibility with those codecs and Audigy.

Sorry, don't have any idea of any registry modifications that could help.
Since I myself am not experiencing similar problems, this could also be
something quite trivial...

Ps. You also said you're using the trial version of PDVD XP (I'm not). Any
idea if it is an old/recent release (there has been an update for PDVD, the
version didn't change though, still 4.0)?

Hi,

Here are some news..

To ensure we're talking about the same version, I uninstalled the demo
version, and bought the full version from my friend for cheap (he just got a
set-top player).

Then, I applied the patch to Build 1329b (March 19, 2002).

Exact same issues still..

I have tried looking at PowerDVD's registry settings, but nothing seems
promising so far (no hidden settings as far as I could tell).

Also, in software like DVDGenie there are only options to tweak some DTS
volume settings. Nothing about directsound latency.

A little question, what soundboard do you have ? Audigy ? Also, what
mainboard chipset ? Any anti-virus ? etc etc.. :-)

J.B

Oh, yes: as a side note, there are two cases when PowerDVD4 crash:

- as soon as I try to activate "dolby prologic 2" (immediate division by
zero)
- when I disable hardware graphics acceleration usage (crashes when I play a
movie then).

Hello,

I#ve got the same problem with my SB 5.1 and Powerdvd.
I solved the problem by reducing the PCI Latency Time from 64 pr 32 to 0. I
can't set it in my bios so i had to buy a prog called Tweakbios.
Here is a link for the problem by creative

Hi,
Which of the 2 problems did you solve: sound crackling or dolby prologic2
crashes ?

For which PCI board(s) did you change the PCI Latency time ? The Audigy
board, or others ?
Did you have to disable DMA to get rid of the problems ?

I need more details...

Thanks
J.B

Mine too is at 32 (which is the BIOS-default for my mobo, and can be changed
from the BIOS)

Latency 32 for me (bios default) too. I went through all choosable values,
from 32 to 248.

Does the DMA settings come into play ? I have never tried disabling the
dvd-rom's or harddisk's dma.

sound crackling

the 5.1

No, Latency i wrote

I can't set it in the bios. So I have to use a shareware called Tweakbios.
Version 1.53

With this program i can set all timmers to 0.
The I've got a chrystal clear sound by watching DVD's using SPDIF in
Powerdvd and 5.1 SPeakers!

Specally for Via Chipset is the problem the Latency Time.
Disabling DMA is not good because of perfomance decrease.

Important LAtency Time = 0

Disabling DMA for either DVD or HDD could dramatically decrease your overall
system performance, so I wouldn't recommend it.

What about ACPI? Do you have that enabled or disabled (It should be enabled
by default)? Because ACPI-support automatically means all devices share
IRQs, you could try disabling it and see if having separate IRQs for
(atleast the Audigy) devices helps. I have ACPI enabled btw, which means
all my devices use IRQ 9:

IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
IRQ 9 Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead
IRQ 9 VIA Rev 5 USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 9 Creative Audigy Player
IRQ 9 Realtek RTL8029(AS)-based Ethernet Adapter

Sure, that's why I haven't done it.

My ACPI is enabled. I have found a PCI slot where the Audigy has it's own
IRQ (don't know which one, because I can't access my home computer right
now).

SiSoft Sandra shows that mostly every device uses the same IRQ, except the
Audigy which has its own :-)

Well, the only think I'm gonna try tonight, is a new Audigy winxp driver
update that Creative has silently released. For now, the driver release from
October2001 is installed on the pc.

J.B

I have this issue as well, but not all the time, only when I use the seek
button. I have found a temporary fix that works (for me) until Cyberlink
update their software. When I hear the clicks I cycle through the play speed
real fast from x1 to x1 (use the n key). This makes the clicks go away.
