We have a little Patriot PC, bought from PC World (UK), which performs OK
apart from occasional hangs, frozen screens and resets. I have experienced
this type of problem before, the solution is usually to do with cooling or
reducing the clock speed or multiplier.
Basic configuration is Cyrix MII 400 CPU, 32M SDRAM, 6.4GByte hard drive,
working on a very compact motherboard which has Socket7, VIA chipset, and
integral VGA, sound, 56k modem, USB and LAN. There appear to be a few
jumpers to be set, but I don't know the make of board, and we don't have a
manual for the machine at all.
Does anyone know what type/make of board is in this machine? I know from
first hand experience that there is no point whatsoever asking anyone at
PCWorld about it!

Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Dave

Hello Dave,

You said that this little PC will hang occasionally, this
means that most of the times it does boot up.

Now this makes the process of finding the Motherboard
manufacturer quite easy.

See, usually during the boot up stage when the Computer is firing up the
BIOS and going thru POST, at the bottom of your screen you will see a few
alphanumeric characters, date and numbers. This is the details of the
BIOS. If you note these down then it will be easier to deduct the
manufacturer of your motherboard, from this.

Then, you should go to "www.wimsbios.com" you will find the necessary
details as to how to proceed further to find out the manufacturer of your
motherboard from the BIOS details that you get.

I could have figured out the manufacturer of your motherboard if you had
given me the details about your BIOS.
You just have to look around over at this website. You will find lot of
details about most motherboards and BIOS etc. It is a very good Website
with lots of great and useful information.

regards

Blue

Suggest that you read the mainboard ID article at:
http://www.pcnineoneone.com

If PC Chips (Hsing Tech) is the maker, look for manuals, etc at:
http://www.pcchips.nl
and:
http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142/pcchips/

Good Hunting,
