When I first tried to set up WinXP on my Dragon Plus I couldn't complete an
installation until I set Plug and Play OS to "no". But WinXP is supposed to
be plug and play compatible, right? And I have updated the BIOS to a newer
revision since then too. So my question is, should I try to set to "yes" now
or will that screw things up for real?

"Somewhere" in MS's maze, I read that Plug and Play OS is for "earlier
OS's" and to set it to NO for Window's XP. Nice of them to make it
clear, isn't it? By the way, I installed XP last week and it went in
nice! Run's stable so far. Haven't really noticed the sound problem
with the scheme's though, but I usually disable those anyway. I think
it is annoying. I don't think it is working except for the Shutdown
thing.

Thanks for clearing that up. The manual does state that you should set it to
"yes" for Windows 95 and so I assumed that the newer PnP OS's would benefit
from setting it to yes as well but that was where I started to have major
problems. I guess I'll just leave it on "no".

We install with P&P OS enabled all the time - no issues at all. Do you
have BIOS 2BA1?

Yes I have 2BA1 but I installed WinXP under 2AA2 then flashed the BIOS after
hearing your recommendation. My question is should I enable it now or will
it cause problems? Should I reinstall WinXP on top of my existing
configuration? Could this be why I find I have to enable the "Reset
Configuration Data" option in the PnP section of the BIOS so often?

If you question is do you need to re-install WinXP after flashing to a
different BIOS - answer is no. Reset configuration data should only be
enabled after installing new hardware & you have a problem.

OK good to know that. But you didn't answer my question about enabling PnP
OS now. Should I do it?

MS says no.

Just depends... if all is OK then leave it. MS actually states that for
Win2K & XP not to enable it, but we usually do & have no issues. But there
are times you do have to disable...

I've turned it back on after the install process with no ill effects. Most
times the only time you'd need to turn it off is during install. If your
system boots with it enabled, your fine. During boot (and install) are the
only times it'll give you trouble.

Just as an FYI, I went and enabled it and couldn't boot. But before I gave
up I enabled the Reset PnP Config option one more time and sure enough it
booted after that. So I have left it on and so far (3-4 boots later and
fingers crossed) I have booted into Windows XP with no hangs. If the problem
comes back I'll post it, but for now it seems as though it may have helped.
Thanks John.
