Hi,
I've got an old Shuttle SN85G4v2 SFF (socket 754) system I was thinking
of upgrading the CPU in. Has anyone tried using a socket 754 Mobile
Athlon 64 CPU in these SFFs?
There's no real reason to think it wouldn't work, except that the ICE
cooling unit in the XPCs is made for desktop CPUs. The ICE heatsink is
made to fit right over a "lidded" desktop CPU, so I'm not sure how well
it would work on a "lidless" mobile CPU. There's less surface area on
the mobile proc, so the ICE heatsink wouldn't fit very well, but
hopefully it would work well enough.
The FN85 motherboard in the SN85G4v2 has a maximum FSB speed of 2200Mhz,
so any chip rated for 2400 or 2600Mhz would be underclocked. However,
getting a Newark core CPU with 1MB L1 cache and SSE3 probably still
makes this upgrade worth considering. If it would work, I'd love to use
the Mobile Athlon 64 4000+ (AMN4000BKX5BU); see:
