Since 'upgrading' to a GA-5AX and AMD K6-2 500 with 128MB PC100 RAM I have
not been able to get my trusty old Orchid Righteous 3D (Voodoo Graphics) to
work properly, especially with the latest 3dfx ref drivers and Direct X7/7a.
Some D3D games (AVP) work OK with the older drivers but Glide or Open GL
games such as HL just lock up. Also with the latest ref drivers and DirectX,
even DirectX diagnostic tool locks up when the 3D card clicks in.

I have tried all the different drivers: the last ones from Orchid; those
that come with Win 98SE; and the latest ref drivers from 3dfx. I have also
tried Safe Mode deletions of drivers and fresh installations, etc. I'm
getting realy p*ssed off with wasting so much time on this. I never had any
such problems with my old Intel TX / 166MMX combination. (Have I picked a
couple of bummers with Giga-byte / AMD?)

Does anyone know if there are any obscure but vital BIOS settings / OS
patches / third party utilities that are required to get this combination to
work?

BTW, I am thinking of giving up and replacing my two graphics cards with a
Voodoo3 3000 PCI. Any problems foreseen with that choice? Any other
recommendations for the same sort of price? (Or should I shove the
Giga-shyte down the pan and go buy an Intel-based board?!)

Grateful for any advice.

My setup details are:

Gigabyte GA-5AX board, Rev 5.x, F3 BIOS
AMD K6-2 500 CPU (correctly jumpered, not overclocked)
128MB PC100 SDRAM (2 x 64MB in Banks 1 and 2, Bank 0 empty)
Matrox Mystique 220, 8MB, in 1st PCI slot
Orchid Righteous 3D (Voodoo 1), 4MB, in 3rd PCI slot
Creative SB PCI128, in 5th PCI slot
USR/3COM ISA Winmodem, flashed to V90, in 2nd ISA slot
Seagate 8.4GB HDD, UDMA33, DMA enabled, Master on Pri IDE
Panasonic 8x CD-ROM, DMA enabled, Master on Sec IDE
Mitsubishi LS-120 (configured as drive A, bootable), Slave on Sec IDE
Win98 SE
Win 98 Bus Master IDE driver for ALi M5229. (Tried to install latest Ali BM
drivers, v3.56, but installation program said Win 98 drivers OK for this
board/chipset)

Possibly relevant BIOS settings: (most are board defaults)
Video:EGA/VGA
Virus Warning: Disabled
CPU Internal Cache: Enabled
External Cache: Enabled
CPU Write Allocate: Enabled
Quick POST: Enabled
VGA Boot From: PCI
PCI/VGA Palette Snoop: Disabled
Video BIOS Shadow: Disabled (have tried Enabled)
Optional ROM Shadows: all Disabled
(Chipset Features) Auto Configuration: Enabled
Graphics Aperture Size: 64MB
VGA Frame Buffer: Enabled
Power Management: Disabled (also disabled in Windows)
PnP/PCI and Integrated Peripherals pages: all on default Auto settings

My son's machine is built around a GA-5AA (AT version of 5AX board) and the
3dfx Voodoo3 3000 AGP is the graphics card. No problems. Incidently, these
two boards support the K6-2+ & K6-3+ CPUs up to 600 MHz; son's running K6-2+
500 at 550 MHz, 2.0v.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

Do you know if there are any power supply considerations with choosing
Voodoo 3 AGP as opposed to the PCI version? (I have noticed from this NG
that there are issues with certain AGP card / mobo combinations).

I think my PSU is 230W.

Speaking only from my own personal experience...

I have used both a Voodoo3 2000 and a Voodoo3 3500TV in my GA-5AX board's
AGP slot and both have so far worked perfectly.

I had real trouble with a Diamond Viper V770 (Nvidia TNT2) AGP card when
used with this board - eventually I gave up and shoved it in another PC,
with an MVP3 chipset motherboard (AOpen AX59 Pro), where it worked
acceptably, for the most part.

I reckon you'll be OK with an AGP V3 of whatever flavour.

Thanks!

I don't suppose you have any tips for getting the Orchid Righteous (Voodoo
Graphics) to work do you? (Re my original post).

I *did* have a Guillemot Maxi Gamer 3D (Voodoo Graphics) board - but
unfortunately I've given it away to a friend. This friend, however, does
have a GA-5AX board too, so I'll see if I can get her to test it out.

Thanks again but don't make any special effort - I've just today bought a
Voodoo3 3000 AGP, which I will install next weekend.

BTW, the V3 has just dropped in price. I got mine for £70 in Gameplay /
Jakarta. (£80 less £10 off for taking out a 'loyalty card'). Even PC World
is selling them for £80 now!

I have a GA-5AX that has problems with x2 graphics cards...
It seems the 4.1 version of this board will only work with x1agp, go
to the ALI site http://www.ali.com.tw and find Aliagpcc.exe. Its a
utility that may help your problem by forcing x1agp, dont worry
there's not much performance loss ...if any.

What graphics card are you using? I had terrible trouble with a Diamond
Viper V770 AGP, but none whatsoever with my current 3dfx Voodoo3 3500TV.
PCIList confirms the V3 is running at 2x AGP and my board is also a 4.1
GA-5AX...
