Joe (or anyone else that can help) - you posted the message below on
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.giga-byte a
while ago.

I have a couple of queries as i want to upgrade the processor in my GA-6BA
(rev 2.5).

1) Do i also need a "slotket" (not sure what this is, but have read this
elsewhere)
2) what do you mean, "...a boxed..." processor?
3) What is "CAS 2" and how do i set it?
4) Do you think the memory config makes a difference to stability?

and 5) can i get a good AGP video card that means i can use all 4 memory
slots?!

oh, and 6) are all 1ghz processors (incl celerons) "coppermine" ?

thanks
mark.

Good news for GA-6BA owners (not exactly sure when it was actually posted on
their web site but it's great news):

The GA-6BA's 1999 "F1g" bios has been updated to "F1" dated Feb 05, 2001 and
it now CORRECTLY displays PIII 1Ghz processors during boot-up (it used to
report 962 MHz) and it automatically skips immediately to the end of the
Quick Memory Check scroll as if I hit the ESC key ..... which is great,
because it used to take about 15-20 seconds to scroll 512 mb of memory, even
when the older F1g bios was set to Quick Memory Check. I used to just hit
the ESC key to skip to the end of the scroll, but now the new 'F1" Bios does
that automatically for me.

Nice of Gigabyte to get around to updating a Bios on an old discontinued
board that they earlier replied to me that there would be no further
updates. Nice work Gigabyte ..... Mucho thanks where ever you are.

Also, I know the Gigabyte site says only the Rev 3.0 boards will work with
the 1.70 or 1.75 volt Coppermine processors, but the funny thing is that
I've been using a Boxed 1.70 volt Slot 1 PIII-1Ghz processor on a "Rev. 2.5"
GA-6BA now for over a year and a half with absolutely NO problems. I'm using
two 16x16 double sided 256mb PC100 modules in slots 1 and 2 setup in my bios
to run at CAS 2.

My Rev. 2.5 board delivers 1.76 volts to my processor and it has not fried
anything yet ..... and I've been working it 8 to 10 hours daily with
processor intensive business applications and 3D games using an ATI
All-In-Wonder 128 Rage Pro 32 mb video card and a high quality 300 watt PC
Power & Cooling AT-Form power supply.

Anyway it works great even if it is not supposed to :)))

Oh .... BTW, the new F1 Bios does not have the PIII Processor Serial Number
Disable option (it enables it by default) so you'll have to go to the Intel
site and download the Intel disabling program if you want to disable the
displaying of your PIII processor serial number while web surfing. Here is
the link to that download from Intel:

Again, mucho thanks Giga-Byte!
