Is anyone doing reasonably heavy 3D gaming using an AGP 2.0 compliant ATI
Radeon 32DDR (or AIW Radeon 32DDR) on their AGP 1.0 compliant Gigabyte BX
chipset boards like the AT Form Gigabyte GA-6BA or any of the Gigabyte ATX
GA-6BX** series boards??

I keep hear horror stories about BX chipset boards (in general) crashing
with the newer AGP 2.0 cards during heavy 3D gaming, so that's why I'm
asking.

I've been using a 32mb AGP 2.0 compliant AIW 128 Pro on my AGP 1.0 compliant
AT Form GA-6BA with a PC Power & Cooling 300 watt AT PS for about a year now
with no real problems. However, I have not really got around to trying any
heavy 3D gaming software yet ..... 2D seems fine and the 3D benchmark tests
I have used seem to run okay without lockups.

I'd like to upgrade to the Radeon AIW now that prices are way down and also
because it offers a digital video output for those new TFT Flat Screen
monitors. I realize it will only run at AGP 2X on the BX chipset boards,
but I'm more concerned with creating the potential for major lockups or
crashes during 3D gaming, etc.

Any comments or thoughts on this would be most greatly appreciated.

I did my gaming using a 64MB DDR VIVO Radeon on a BX2000+ I had, until I
could afford to get a 1GHZ cpu and the necessary motherboard, without any
problems.

I did have problems up the rear, with the card and my system locking up,
after the monitor went into powerdown mode, until I got Windows2000 and put
that on my system.

Thanks for the info ....... Were the problems when using Windows 98/ME only
after the monitor screen powered down for energy savings OR after your
system went into Standby mode?

Getting video back after Standby mode has always been a know problem with
many video cards in Window 98/ME.

Enjoy the holidays.

The problem I had was within Windows98 only. After I went to Windows2000 the
problem was gone.

My system did not go into standby mode, it was the monitor that would lock
everything up, when it went into standby mode.

Hi there, all...
The powerdown in Win98 / WinME drove me crazy for a while as well. From
what I can find out on the net, as well as my own experience - it's not a
chipset issue - it's a driver issue from ATI. I resolved it using the
4.13.7075 drivers from ATI - which are WHQL certified. See the driver
readme re: Direct X certification. (They're unsigned, but certified for
DirectX 8).
Only one small detail - these drivers lock the AGP at 2x on the Via chipset
(I've an Apollo Pro 133A) - but AGP should work at 4x on the BX board. Many
of the gamers don't see much of a difference between 2x and 4x, so I'm quite
happy to stay at 2x and have my powerdown capability.
There's another set of drivers that are WHQL candidates that haven't been
officially released yet - 4.13.7191 I think. I haven't tried them yet.
I've tried many of the non-WHQL drivers all the way up to 7199 series beta -
including the current 7189 drivers and the 7092 drivers that came with my
Radeon board - and they all have this quirk with suspend/standby mode.
The link for the 7075 driver is:
http://support.ati.com/products/pc/radeon/win98/radeon_win98_drivers.html
Also - good source of inof on the Radeons is http://www.rage3d.com
Hope this helps!

Wrongo, the BX chipset only supports 2X AGP and cannot go any higher. I had
a BX chipset motherboard, and all it could support was 2X AGP.

The VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset however supports 4X AGP.

Bottom line though (going back to my original question) is that a AGP 1.0 BX
chipset board like the GA-BX* series can be used with a AGP 2.0 card like
the AIW Radeon and still handle the 3D gaming without crashing under Windows
ME as long as I don't use powerdown standby modes ..... which I don't.

Does that sum it up about right?

Thanks .... Joe.

You're right, Nightowl...
BX only supports 2x AGP... Lapse on my part... I've been working far too
long on this Via chipset.

Note to Joe...
I'm successfully using powerdown mode at 2x AGP on the 7075 drivers under
Win98SE...
I have not been able to make powerdown work with the 7199, 7197,7189,7092 or
even the 3056 drivers...

And yes - you can use the AGP 2.0 board on the BX series motherboards. It's
the reverse that will get you into trouble. You can't use an AGP 1x/2x
(only) board on a Intel 845 chipset - you have to use an AGP 4x adapter...

Thanks for the help, Nightowl...

Mucho thanks to everyone who replied .... most helpful ...... I'm off to
pick up a AIW Radeon for about $100 for my GA-6BA BX chipset board.

I would worry, the card will work on the board.
