Anyone who is familiar with this setup or similar might be able to
enlighten me
with possible solutions.

Currently running an old GA-6BA with a PIII 500 Slot1 which is very
stable.
Decided to give it some more life and today tried to upgrade to 1.1Ghz
coppermine celeron 128KB FCPGA with an ABIT SLOTKET !!!
This board supposedly supports this setup as specified on the gigabyte
website!

Problem is when Computer starts it gets through the post fine but
after it displays "starting Windows 98", the microsoft registry
checker is displayed confirming that I have a corrupt registry and has
been succesfully replaced it with a good one. It asks to restart
machine...this then loops continuously...reboot...find corrupt
reg...replace with good registry and reboot over and over!

Have checked the ram which is the usual culprit for registry errors
and it's fine.
Machine works perfectly upon reinstallation of original PIII
slot1....no reg checker problems!

Abit slotket is setup correctly for the celeron cpu...tried both auto
and manual....1.75V core/coppermine/100Mhz FSB.

Motherboard is setup correctly at 11x multiplier according to gigabyte
website.

I can enter the bios with the celeron cpu installed and makes no
difference whether default settings are selected or not.
CPU voltages and Power supply voltages are fine!
CPU temp is 27 C.
On post the 1.1Ghz cpu is displayed as celeron 1068Mhz and all seems
to be quite well except unable to get out of Registry checker loop!
PSU is 300 Watt.

Current Bios for motherboard is 6BA V.F1g and Celeron 1.1Ghz is a cD0
stepping cpu (SL5XU)

Is is possibly a problem with current bios and cpu stepping?...there
is a newer bios (F1) available recently...is there a major difference
between this and (f1g)

This setup seems to work well for others but my machine does not seem
to like it!

ABit slotket !!! is rev 1.0 if this makes any difference.

Bios agent reports current bios (with PIII installed) as:

Program: Unicore Chip Detect v0.72 2000.03.10
BIOS Date: 09/29/00
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 09/29/2000-i440BX-W977-2A69KG0AC-00
BIOS Eval: Intel 440BX/ZX AGPSet BIOS for 6BA V.F1g
Chipset: Intel 440BX/ZX rev 3
Superio: Winbond 977EF rev 4 found at port 3F0h

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Jeff.

1. Update your bios!
F1g does NOT support CPU ID code 068A.
There is a newish bios on the GB website, it is version F1 and it is later than
F1g.
It DOES support the 068A CPU microcode update.

Get it here: http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/temp/6ba_f1.zip
This is what it does.
(The F1b bios didnt correctly support the 1.1GHz Celerons or PIII's)
1. Support up to Pentium III & Celeron 1.1G CPU (only FC-PGA CPU & PCB
revision : 3.0 or above)
2. Support 75GB HDD
3. Enablie IR device under Win98 win2000.
4. FIX Kloicom communicmation card conflict with sensor chip.
5. Fixed will show!when 1.6Vcore CPU is plugged

Thanks Jeff for your reply, meant to get back here about this earlier.
During the week I updated the bios to F1 as you suggested (I had
suspected the update was necessary).

New bios reports the cpu at 1.1Ghz now and not 1068mhz as it did
before....Core Voltage at 1.75 as before.
Expected it to boot into 98SE perfectly this time and what do you
know...same bloody registry checker loop problem in ms-dos??? So I
bypassed the ms-dos reg checker by changing the settings in
regscan.ini and a whole host of other errors began...
eg...
Himem.sys missing
Bad Fault in MS-DOS Extender.
internal stack overflows
Error Initializing CONFIGMG:
Windows Protection Faults...etc etc.

It still wont get into windows destop without freezing completely and
requiring a restart...Its definitely not the ram..... 110% sure about
that!

Tried another slotket...this time the crappy super slocket III (it was
cheap!) and that gave exactly the same sort of ridiculous errors at I
received with the abit slotket !!!.

Finally I swapped out my main HDD for a spare 20GB that I could format
and experiment on.....resulting in complete freeze ups while
attempting installs of xp , win2k and 98SE.

After many wasted hours I finally took out the 1.1G and put back in
the PIII 500
and main HDD it booted perfectly and stable as a rock since!

Either having no luck with slotkets or i have a dodgy cpu or gigabyte
are telling me the F1 bios supports cpu's that it doesn't!

I suspect dodgy slotkets....Anyone know of any other reliable slotkets
that definitely supports 1.1ghz or 1Ghz celerons 128KB FCPGA + GA-6BA
with F1 bios?
Or possibly and other complaints similar to this that have had a
successful resolution?

I should have went with a new board and athlonxp while I had the
chance....this cheap upgrade for an old board may yet end up costing
more than what would have been the better choice.....the current price
of good slotkets is ridiculous.

Thanks

Jeff.

Jeff,

I have a GA-6BA. as I recall it has BIOS F1g. (the 1Ghz is reported a 962Mhz
on boot).

I upgraded from a slot 1 550 to a Celeron 1ghz (coppermine) some months ago.
system is 100% stable, I had no problems. It worked straight away.

This is on a Rev 3.0 Ga-6BA board. The slocket is a (no longer produced I
think) Ggiabyte GA-6R7 which I picked up cheap on Ebay. No onboard switches
/ regulator or anything.

Don't give up. SLOT1 CPUs still have some residual value. I sold my Slot1
550 on Ebay for a little more than the 1Ghz socket 370 Celeron cost!

I do have a custom cooler on my voltage regulator, as that used to cause all
sorts of strange errors, long before the Celeron though.

Josey.
